Houchin was the winner of the women’s 2700+ mile Tour Divide Mountain Bike Race in 2018 and 2019. She is also the current single speed women’s record holder for the Arizona Trail Race and the Tour Divide, as well as the women’s overall record holder for the Colorado Trail Race. Houchin is a citizen of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe and serves on the board for the Northland Foundation's Maada’cooking Grassroots Granting Program. She is also a cohort 12 member of the Native Nation Rebuilders Program and works towards increasing food sovereignty in her tribal community as a recipient of a Native Farmer and Rancher Apprenticeship grant.

The Center of Southwest Studies is partnering with Fort Lewis College's Athletics Department, the Gender & Sexuality Studies program, and the FLC Outdoor Equity group in hosting this event. This event is also made possible through the generous financial support of Centura Mercy Hospital, Durango Hot Springs Resort & Spa, and Tafoya Barrett and Associates PC.
