Collection Description

Historical/Biographical Note: La Plata Abstract Company is the oldest continuously operating title company in southwestern Colorado. The donor Mrs. Ptolemy's son Rob Ptolemy bought La Plata Abstract Company from her husband (his father); the company now (2005) has approximately fifty employees and includes Colorado Land Title Company and Rocky Mountain Mortgage, with offices in Durango, Bayfield, Cortez, and Pagosa Springs. The Durango office has company records dating back to 1874, including microfilm rolls (produced by the Company) of all deeds recorded in La Plata County from 1874 to the present, and indexing books from 1874 to 1994. Mining claims are almost always 1,800 feet by 300 feet (i.e., 10 acres), and in southwestern Colorado they generally are on (or, in the case of patented claims, surrounded by) public lands.

Scope & Contents: The articles of incorporation, abstracts of records of lode mining claims, and various other instruments in this collection pertaining to property in La Plata County can be useful in a variety of local history research purposes. The compilation of land documents, arranged alphabetically by names of area businesses, can allow the tracing of land ownership. For a more extensive set of records see the La Plata County Clerk and Recorder.

Arrangement: The series and boxes are numbered consecutively. Because we do not expect to add to this collection, the boxes are numbered in one single numbering scheme starting with 1.

Processing Information: This inventory was prepared by Fort Lewis College archivist Todd Ellison, January 2002 (last updated November 2005). The list was initially produced (handwritten) on July 25, 1983, possibly by Ruth Boyd. Initial data entry was by Delaney Library assistant Rob Yazzie, August 6-7, 2002; assistance with further listing of contents of volumes was by archival student assistant Haley Sladek, November 2005. Website design was by Todd Ellison, August 7, 2002.

Detailed Description of the Collection

Series descriptions

Note regarding the organization of this collection: Materials in this collection are arranged by series. The series are numbered consecutively.  Because we do not expect to add to this collection, the boxes are numbered in one single numbering scheme starting with 1. Folder numbers start with 1 in each box. Items within each series (e.g., correspondence, reports) and within each folder are arranged chronologically, unless noted otherwise. The series are organized from highest hierarchical level to lowest; from most general to most specific.

Series 1:    La Plata County businesses, typescripts of articles of incorporation, circa 1878-1937. 24 folders, in 1.5 document cases. Arrangement is alphabetical by name of company.

Series 2  La Plata County mining lodes claims abstracts of record, circa 1873-1926. 7 oversize volumes and 2 unbound items, in 7 flat boxes. Not yet described in further detail. These include (for the most part) grantor-grantee lists/indexes pertaining to ownership of lodes of ore deposits in numerous mining districts in La Plata County (especially California and Needle Mountain). The mining districts include Baker, California, Cascade, Castle Rock, Florida, Junction Creek, and Needle Mountain.

Series 3   Other ledgers, circa late 19th century-early 20th century. 2 oversize volumes, in 2 flat boxes.
