Archival Finding Aids

Finding aids are essential tools for exploring archival collections. They offer detailed information, including collection summaries, historical or biographical context, subject lists, and descriptions of the materials and their arrangement. Most finding aids also include a container list to help locate specific items within a collection. To learn more about using finding aids, please consult our Guide to Finding Aids

Our finding aids are updated on an ongoing basis as we add information about collections that are newly processed.

Collection Description

Historical/Biographical NoteWoodrow Wilson "Woody" Crumbo was a Potawatomi artist; the first Indian artist of note to work in oils. He had over 500 paintings in museums before he was 40 years old. Born in Lexington, Oklahoma, he lived with a Creek Indian family as a boy, and graduated from Bacone Indian College in Muskogee, Oklahoma where he became Director of the Art Department a week after he graduated with his degree. He was a principal art buyer for the Thomas Gilcrease Foundation in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Mr. Crumbo selected and purchased a large collection representing the Taos Art Colony and its founders. He was adopted into many tribes including the Sioux and Muscogee (Creek) and taught at Oklahoma University and Wichita State University. He was Mr. Evans’ artistic mentor; they became mining partners and were headquartered in Taos, New Mexico. Company names included: Taos Uranium and Exploration, Co.; Taos Minerals Co.; and Solar Minerals.

Scope & Contents: These are records and correspondence (many of them, photocopies, from an age when photocopying was rather primitive) regarding various mining operations in Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada, ca. 1905-197-, especially those of Max Evans and Woody Crumbo, partners in Taos Uranium and Exploration, Co.; Taos Minerals Co.; and Solar Minerals. (Scarcely any of the records pertain directly to Mr. Crumbo.)

Arrangement: Because we do not expect to add to this collection, the boxes are numbered in one single numbering scheme starting with "1", and there is a single alphabetically arranged series of subject files.

Acquisitions Information: This collection has accession # 2002:10004, donated by Max Evans on October 4, 2002.

Processing Information: In the fall of 2002, students in the SW 340 Archives class arranged and described this collection under the supervision of the archivist. Southwest Studies student library intern Bertina Nez prepared the container list in January-February of 2003. This finding aid was produced by the archivist in February of 2003. The finding aid was updated and reformatted by archival student worker Daryl Begaye in the Winter of 2012.
