Collection Description

Historical/Biographical Note: For an early online history of mining in the San Juan Basin region of Southwest Colorado, see Mines and Mining Men. This resource provides background on the notable fact that "the modern electrical current was first generated and transmitted for commercial use" in the mining industry of Telluride, Colorado.

Scope & Contents: This collection includes bills, deeds, newspapers, ore shipment records, invoices, receipts, maps, production reports, ledgers, prospectuses, agreements, histories, etc., pertaining to various mining operations in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado and further afield.

Mines and mining companies represented in this collection include the Ledge Mining and Milling Company, Iowa Mining and Milling Company, L.B.G. Mining Company, Socorro Mines, and Red Arrow Mine. The collection also includes the American Institute of Mining directories, 1927-1953, Who's Who in Engineering, 1931-1948, various reports, yearbooks, and other records and printed materials pertaining to mining. Includes 2 bound volumes (and a photocopy of the Durango, Colorado, section of) Mines and Mining Men by John G. Canfield, 1893.

Arrangement: The series are numbered consecutively. Boxes are not numbered as we expect to add materials to this collection. Folder numbers start over with 1 in each series. Items within each series (e.g., correspondence, reports) and within each folder are arranged chronologically unless otherwise noted. The series are organized from highest hierarchical level to lowest; or from most general to most specific.

Processing Information: This collection was arranged and described by Center archival volunteers Dr. Bud Davis and Paula Wiseman in early 2008. The folder list and online inventory was produced by Deandra Jones in Winter 2010 and Tia Flippin in Summer 2010.
