Collection Description
Historical/Biographical Note: The Mining History Association was created in 1989 by a group of dedicated mining history enthusiasts during a meeting of the Colorado History Association and was incorporated in 1993. Most of the materials in this collection have been donated over time by two of the MHA’s founding members, Bob Spude and Duane Smith. The Mining History Association seeks to increase awareness of the history of mineral extraction in the West and all over the world.
Scope & Contents: The collection contains administrative records, officer’s correspondence, and membership information of the Mining History Association. Also contained are the records of the various conferences that MHA held annually and the records of the 3rd International Mining History Conference which the MHA played a significant role in. Included with the collection are the MHA’s newsletter, “Mining History News,” as well as other newsletters and papers regarding mining history.
Arrangement: The series are numbered consecutively around basic types of materials relating to the Mining History Association. Individual boxes are numbered consecutively starting with 1 within each section by roughly chronological order. Because we do anticipate this collection being added to, each series has its own numbering scheme by year to allow for new material to be added as it is accessioned.
Processing Information: The collection was rehoused, arranged, and described by archival intern Joseph Helzer during the Winter, Summer, and Fall of 2013 under the direction of the Archivist. The boxes were extensively re-arranged to establish intellectual order by the Center Staff, as they were collected from multiple sources and original order was inconsistent. The finding aid was created by Joseph Helzer under the direction of the Librarian in the Fall of 2013.
