Archival Finding Aids

Finding aids are essential tools for exploring archival collections. They offer detailed information, including collection summaries, historical or biographical context, subject lists, and descriptions of the materials and their arrangement. Most finding aids also include a container list to help locate specific items within a collection. To learn more about using finding aids, please consult our Guide to Finding Aids

Our finding aids are updated on an ongoing basis. We add information to collections that are unprocessed or partially processed as we can.

Collection Description

Historical/Biographical Note: These records were created and/or compiled by the La Plata County Court, which later became the District Court of La Plata County in Colorado’s Sixth Judicial District. The court convened in Durango during the period in which these records were produced.

Scope & Contents: This collection consists of documents and certifications regarding persons born abroad who were petitioning the La Plata County District Court in Durango, Colorado, for citizenship in the United States, during the first four decades of Durango's history. Due to their historically significance, the records in this small collection are permanently valuable. These documents have proven to be useful to genealogists and others seeking biographical data regarding La Plata County pioneers and their families.

Arrangement: Materials in this collection are arranged by series. The series are numbered consecutively. Because we do not expect to add to this collection, the boxes are numbered in one single numbering scheme starting with 1. Folder numbers start with 1 in each box.

Acquisitions Information: The Center has no documentation regarding the provenance of this material, which was given to the Center through Duane Smith, presumably from the La Plata County Court House at some time in the 1970s or 1980s.

Processing Information: Center of Southwest Studies Archival Assistant Cindy Jackinsky arranged this collection in the Fall of 1996. This guide was produced by the archivist with data entry assistance by Cindy Jackinsky, in October of 1996. Archival student worker Tia Flippin edited and reformatted the online inventory in the Fall of 2011.
