Series descriptions

Series 1:  Study of the tri-ethnic community of Ignacio, Colorado, reports, circa 1961-1986.  12 folders, in document cases 1 and 2.  Arrangement is chronological.  Books and papers pertaining to (and resulting from) a ten-year study of the tri-ethnic community of Ignacio, Colorado. The ethnic groups studied were (1) Southern Ute and Navajo (the latter, students present at the Ignacio boarding school), (2) Hispanic-Americans, and (3) Anglo-Americans.  The study was conducted through University of Colorado under the direction of Omer Stewart and was begun in the late 1940s.  Due to the nature of the report, the town of Ignacio was not mentioned often, if at all. Accession 2001:04007.  These materials were given by their authors to James Canan, then Bureau of Indian Affairs superintendent in Ignacio. Mr. Canan gave them to Mr. Tom Wiseman, longtime resident of Ignacio, in the hopes that the materials would be placed in an archival repository that could preserve them and make them available.
