HELEN SLOAN DANIELS PAPERS

The Helen Sloan Daniels Collection includes an assortment of hundreds of
printed materials that include scholarly journals, legal documents, and newspaper clippings, as well as scrapbooks addressing issues pertaining to the various Native American groups in the Southwest (primarily the Apaches, the Hopi, the Navajo, the various Pueblos and the Utes) and local archaeological interests. One of the more unusual items in this collection is the Southern Ute Agency Special U.S. Indian Agent's letterpress copybook of outgoing correspondence to the U.S. Commissioner of Indian Affairs, March 5-July 26, 1899.  Also of interest to our researchers are the 290 photoprints, postcards, and drawings that add to the richness of the Helen Sloan Daniels papers.

Added entry terms:
Indians of North America
Archaeology--Colorado--Durango
Archaeologists--Colorado--Durango
Women archaeologists--Colorado--Durango
Apache Indians
Hopi Indians
Navajo Indians
Pueblo Indians
Ute Indians
Zuni Indians

Biographical note

Helen Sloan Daniels, a third generation Durangoan, was born on December 21, 1899, in Durango, Colorado. Coming from a family that was noted for being very active in community service, she carried on this tradition through her work as a trustee for the Durango Public Library and as an officer for the San Juan Basin Archaeological Society.  With the exception of attending four years of college at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Mrs. Daniels spent her entire life in Durango until her death in May of 1979.

Administrative information

Acquisition information:  This collection is constituted of accessions 1968:05001, 1994:01007, 2000:06008A, and 2002:03044.

Processing information Alexia Lopez, student in the introductory archives class at Fort Lewis College, initially processed most of the collection in the fall 1993 trimester, under the supervision of Todd Ellison, Certified Archivist at the Center of Southwest Studies, who produced this inventory in October of 1998 (last revised July 2007).  From June through July of 2007, Professional Archival Intern Jerrid Lee Miller arranged the collection into its present form, created the folder-level container list, and otherwise expanded the collection descriptions.  A slim folder of newspaper clippings not pertaining to the scope of this collection was deaccessioned, as was a Pikes Peak region mini-postcard booklet and Denver Post rotagravure color picture of Pikes Peak page that were transferred to the Pioneers Museum in Colorado Springs.
