Introduction/ Scope and contents

Years this material was created: 1981-2004

Quantity: .8 linear shelf feet (in 2 document cases)

This collection consists of the records of La Plata County Search and Rescue, a volunteer, nonprofit group operating under the sheriff's office and based in Durango. The collection includes organizational records, minutes, meeting attendance records, correspondence, financial statements and an inventory of equipment, fundraising records, search and rescue mission reviews and statistics, training records and printed materials, newspaper clippings (photocopied archivally by the Center), and the organization's newsletter, first titled Lost Tracks, then untitled, then The Belay Line. The collection documents the organization's search and rescue work in relation to major outdoor recreational activities in the county, including hiking, rock climbing, mountaineering, horseback riding, mountain biking, rafting and kayaking, hunting, and snowmobiling. The collection also documents the organization's response to disasters such as avalanches and air crashes, some of which received national attention.
