This collection is comprised of 136 photoprints and 278 real photo/lithographic postcards of the Silverton (Colo.) vicinity.

 

Biographical note

George Puth was born on April 7, 1888, and died in Appleton, Outagamie, Wisconsin, in June of 1968.


Administrative information

Acquisition information: Mrs. George Puth donated this collection of materials to the Center of Southwest Studies prior to 1980 (retrospective accession #s 1968:12001 and 2002:03041).   The gift was acknowledged in the State Board of Agriculture minutes, 12/10/1968, and a letter from Robert Delaney to the donor on 10/24/1967.  Dr. Delaney listed the collection on page 38 of his November 1979 guide, Opportunities for Research.

Processing information The photographs were arranged and described by Fort Lewis College Professional Archival Intern Jerrid Miller in May of 2007, under the supervision of Todd Ellison, Certified Archivist at the Center of Southwest Studies.

Folder 1        San Juan Mountain area mines, circa 1920-1924.  Includes 24 photos of mines and mining camps found in the San Juan area region including Sunny Side Mine, May Day Camp and Gold King Mine.

Folder 2        San Juan Mountain area buildings, circa 1920s.  Includes 35 photos of various buildings that are found throughout the San Juan Mountains in Colorado.

Folder 3        San Juan Mountain area landscapes, circa 1920s.  Includes 38 photos of various landscapes found throughout the San Juan Mountain area of Colorado.

Folder 4        Colorado people photoprints, circa 1920s.  Includes 21 photos of various unidentified individuals that include military personnel, cowboys and pilots. 

Folder 5        Other states photoprints, circa 1920s.  Includes 18 photos of various landmarks in other states that include Washington and the Midwest states.

Series 2--Postcards, folders 1-16:

Folder 1        Pike's Peak and related subjects, lithographic postcards, circa 1909.  Contains 19 postcards of Pike's Peak, including several vistas from the vantage of the Peak and the Pike's Peak Cog Railroad.

Folder 2        Colorado Springs, Colorado lithographic postcards, circa 1909.  Contains 27 postcards of various points of interest in the Colorado Springs area including the El Paso County Court House, the Antler's Hotel, Monument Valley Park and Acacia Park

Folder 3        Colorado railroads lithographic postcards, circa 1909.  Contains 24 postcards of Colorado's various railroads including the Argentine Central Railway, the Colorado Midland Railway, the Cripple Creek Short Line and the D.& R.G. Railway.

Folder 4        Garden of the Gods lithographic postcards, circa 1909.  Contains 12 postcards relating to the various formations found in the Garden of the Gods.

Folder 5        Cheyenne Canyon lithographic postcards, circa 1909.  Contains 12 postcards relating to various scenes in and around the Cheyenne Canyon region of Colorado.

Folder 6        Royal Gorge lithographic postcards, circa 1909.  Contains 9 postcards relating to the Royal Gorge in Colorado.

Folder 7        Moffat Road lithographic postcards, circa 1909.  Contains 15 postcards depicting various scenes along the Moffat Road in Colorado.

Folder 8        Manitou, Colorado lithographic postcards, circa 1909.  Contains 11 postcards of various points of interest in the Manitou, Colorado area.

Folder 9        Williams Canyon lithographic postcards, circa 1909.  Contains 5 postcards of various local attractions in Williams Canyon, Colorado.

Folder 10      Other Colorado lithographic postcards, circa 1909.Contains 18 postcards depicting scenes from a cattle round-up, Cripple Creek, Helen Hunt Jackson's grave, the Mount of the Holy Cross,  Ute Pass as well as several other depictions.

Folder 11      Canada lithographic postcards, circa 1941.  Contains 9 postcards depicting famous land marks in the Yukon Territory and Edmonton, Alberta.

Folder 12      Southwestern Colorado landscape real photo postcards, circa 1910.  Contains 54 postcards depicting landscapes in the San Juan Mountains and adjoining areas.

Folder 13      Southwestern Colorado buildings real photo postcards, circa 1910.  Contains 35 postcards depicting buildings in the San Juan Mountains and adjoining areas.

Folder 14      Colorado mining real photo postcards, circa 1910.  Contains 7 postcards relating to Colorado mining that includes a mine being prepped for demolition, scaffolding as well as several portraits of the miners themselves.

Folder 15      Other Colorado real photo postcards, circa 1910.  Contains 8 postcards depicting a variety of images that include Elephant Rock at Palmer Lake and the armory and post office in Golden, Colorado.

Folder 16      Other states real photo postcards, circa 1910-1941.  Contains13 postcards depicting scenes from Wisconsin (6), Costello, New Mexico (3) and Washington State (4).
