This collection contains records and memorabilia of a Four Corners petroleum engineer, De Lasso Loos. Materials include his field log books, hundreds of engineering/ drilling catalogs, handbooks, and manuals, such as the National Lead Company Baroid Sales Division Drilling Mud Data Book, circa 1954; at least 6 issues of Henderson's Four Corners petroleum directory, 1963-1969; Northeast Blanco Unit well drilling/ production reports; several hundred business cards pertaining to the Four Corners oil and gas industry; 1 linear shelf foot of engineer's papers; a few photos; four framed items, including a painting and three photoprints of gas wells; approximately 30 USGS maps, some with markings added of well sites in the Bancos Mesa, Burnt Mesa, Gomez Ranch, and Pine River quadrangles of New Mexico (may include some duplicates); and approximately 20 survey maps in the area of Township Nos. 30 and 31 North, Range Numbers 6 and 7 West of the New Mexico Principal Meridian, circa 1917-1959. Also, three pieces of equipment and two metal signs.
"The oil & gas industry has played a very important role in the heritage of our region, starting with the notable activity in the early 50’s; the ensuing peaks and valleys of production; and most recently the very active coal bed methane industry. [The Center of Southwest Studies] has considerable collections on the precious metals mining industry and needs to do the same with the oil and gas industry." Processing information: This collection was arranged and described by Fort Lewis College student archival assistant Derwin Begay in January-July of 2007. He also produced the folder list. The inventory was prepared by Fort Lewis College archivist Todd Ellison, in June-July of 2007.
The following items were separated out into other collections at the Center of Southwest Studies during processing:
- Approximately 30 U.S. Geological Survey topographic maps with locations of oil and gas wells noted: placed with the Southwest USGS topographic maps at the Delaney Library (2006:111.002).
- Four artifacts, placed with the Center's artifacts collections: centrifuge (2006:111.005); orifice pressure tester (2006:111.006); pressure gauge (2006:111.007); and gas well painting (2006:111.008).
De Lasso Loos was born in Yoakum, Texas, circa 1921. The origins of his unusual given name are unknown. He joined the Army Air Corps at about age 20, and served in New Guinea, where he flew the F-4 and F-5 version of the P-38 in the 8th Photo Reconnaissance Unit in World War II. He was the youngest major there at the time; when asked to explain that, he replied that the others had died. His squadron diary was republished in 2005.
The Loos family (including the son, Philip, age 1 at the time) moved to Durango in 1951 when Mr. Loos was hired to work for Blackwood & Nichols Co. as its District Superintendent for the Northeast Blanco Unit in northern New Mexico. He rented a second floor office on Main Street, above Pennington Photo Studio, next to the old Post Office. Loos helped to pioneer the use of procedures for coalbed methane drilling in the Four Corners region. When he retired at the end of his career as a petroleum mining engineer, a road near Navajo Dam was named after him: De Lasso Loos Road. His wife lived ten months after the death of Mr. Loos.
Mr. Loos' son Philip Loos (donor of this collection) graduated from Fort Lewis College with a degree in chemistry in 1976. Professor Duane Smith of the History Department was a major influence on Philip, igniting a love of mining in the Southwest. Philip Loos joined the Air Force in 1977, and worked at NORAD in Cheyenne Mountain, cataloging objects in space.
