"Robert York earned an M.A. in anthropology with an emphasis in archaeology from
the University of Arizona, Tucson in 1971 and a B.A. in anthropology from
Northern Arizona University, Flagstaff in 1969." York’s career in the western
United States has been by and large as an archaeologist for various federal
agencies: the Bureau of Land Management (BLM); the U.S. Forest Service in
Colorado Wyoming and New Mexico; and the Office of Navajo and Hopi Indian
Relocation in Arizona. He has held archaeology positions with various museums
and with the Wyoming State Historic Preservation Office in Cheyenne and Laramie.

archaeological and anthropological topics relevant to western U.S. archaeology
and cultural resource management issues. York produces collaborative research
and works jointly on projects with his wife, Gigi York, a registered

Arrangement back to top The personal papers of Robert York arrived at the Center in a loosely
arranged order created by the donor. Robert York’s collection consisted of 13
boxes marked in broad terms according to the location of his employment and
general professional duties. Therefore, the collection is not in any strict
chronological order other than the succession of years according to where he was
working. Boxes and folders are arranged by subject and/or material type.
Staying true to York’s organization, the series are College, the early years in
Nevada (BLM, UNLV Museum), his tenure at San Juan National Forest, Office of
Navajo and Hopi Indian Relocation and a few documents post 1995.
The series from the San Juan National Forest is further organized into
the two sub-series cultural resources management and archaeology, which follows Robert York’s own hierarchical system marked on the
original boxes. Although the terms “Cultural Resource Management” and
“archaeology” certainly intersect, there is an effort to distinguish the
concepts of resources management as policy development that attempts to preserve
and to protect and the archaeological processes of excavation, analysis and
intellectual interpretation. Thus CRM and archeology is separated into two
series whereas “CRM” represents policy (laws, guidelines, preservation, etc.,
concerning archeology and other management issues) and “Archaeology” is the
materials that focus on the theories, practices, artifact attributes, and data
that Robert York collected.
The Center retained the creator's original order of photographs and slides, which is
basically chronological.
Scope & Contents back to top The collection contains published materials, reports, surveys,
inventories, manuscripts, notes, correspondence and photographs collected during Robert York’s early years in graduate school in Arizona and as an archaeologist for the BLM in Nevada.
His position as Cultural Resource Manager (CRM) and archeologist for Forest Service at the San Juan National Forest (1979-1989) represents the bulk of the collection.
Also included are materials collected during his time as CRM and archeologist at Medicine Bow National Forest, the Office of Navajo and Hopi Indian Removal (1990-1995), and Espanola National Forest.
Notable papers in the collection are Robert York’s research on Early Paleo-Indian occupation in the southwest, documentation of early investigations into using ground penetrating radar (a.k.a. remote sensing)
in archaeology, and material related to considerations of Chimney Rock receiving national monument status.
The collection is an example of the changing profession of archaeology over a 30 year time period with consideration to contemporary regulations such as ARPA (Archaeology Resources Protection act) and NAGPRA
(Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act), materials concerning historical markers and preservation related to Section106 of National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and other Cultural Resources

An accrual was later donated in 2009 by Robert York with accession number 2009:057.
Separated Materials back to top Photographs were placed in collection P017-09 folders 2-4.
Certain published materials have been placed on Delaney Library shelves in order
to ensure easier access for the patron using the the Fort Lewis library online catalog.
