Collection P 056
Nina Heald Webber Southwest Colorado photographs
Nina Heald Webber, compiler and donor

Approximate years: 1883-1969
Volume: approximately 200 images, in 1 document case, 1 oversize flat lidded box, and 2 small boxes

This collection consists of images, many of them rare, of southwest Colorado.  Subjects include Durango and Mesa Verde National Park, and scenes in Silverton, Ouray, Telluride, and other small Rocky Mountain towns of the Western Slope of Colorado.  The glass lantern slides are mostly views of archaeological ruins and persons in Mesa Verde National Park in the 1930s.  The bulk of the stereographs are views of Ouray and its surrounding regions between 1890 and 1907.

This collection is useful for anyone researching the history of various Southwestern topics and may be especially helpful for writers, instructors, and students who are seeking visual materials for classroom instruction.

Administrative information

About the organization of this collection:  This collection is in several groups by type of photograph: photoprints (various sizes; oversize are housed together), approximately 30 glass lantern slides (3.25 x 4"), and approximately 40 stereographs (3.5 x 7").  Within each type, the photographs are grouped topically into the following four geographic subject or other topic, and somewhat chronologically within that topic (insofar as it was possible to determine the date of the image).  The categories are:
1.    Durango (Colo.) and vicinity.
2.    Mesa Verde National Park and related archaeological sites.
3.    Other Southwest Colorado scenes including
Animas Canyon, Cortez, Mancos, the Million Dollar Highway, Ophir, Ouray, Rico, Silverton, and Telluride.
4.    R
egional railroads of southwest Colorado, including the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad.

Acquisition of this collection:  This collection was a gift from Nina Heald Webber to the Center of Southwest Studies (accessions 2002:01002, 2002:12006, 2003:05013, 2004:12011.2, 2005:03011, 2005:05004, 2005:09018, 2005:11009, 2005:12002, etc.).  The initial bulk of the collection was appraised on November 1, 2004 by Dr. David Farmer.

Processing information:  Todd Ellison, Certified Archivist, Center of Southwest Studies, produced item level descriptions, archivally re-housed the photographs, and produced this guide to the collection in December of 2005 (last revised August 2007).
