OCS assists local communities, students, and faculty to improve academic, social, economic, and ecological well-being of the Four Corners region. The organization was tasked with providing aid on local and community issues involving, but not limited to, mine reclamation, historic preservation, fire related issues, and tourism. back to top

Arrangement The series arrangement is based on OCS projects and original order as well as attempts to create some order where none existed.back to top

Scope & Contents The Office of Community Services acted as a conduit between local and civic parties interested in preservation efforts in the Four Corners region. Much of what has been filed away within this specific collection consisted of reports, findings, briefings, proposed and finalized plans, and cost analysts. The subject matter within this collection is centered around the Four Corners region with an emphasis on the region of Southwestern Colorado. An exception is the Mirror Project which was created in order to make an account of people’s living experiences and attempts to document life in the west. Also some reports are written to describe teachers’ experiences and spans NM, UT, SD, WY, OR, NE, and OK. back to top

Series 6:   The Red Mountain collection included grant applications, request to numerous foundations and federal assistance for the preservation of deteriorating mining sites. These sites are specifically located in or around the Red Mountain pass Colorado. Associations of these areas are Ouray County, San Juan County, and La Plata County. All are working towards preserving mining sites and other land areas deemed historical. Ken Francis has been the director of OCS and worked in partnership with Ouray County Historical Society and worked in close correspondence with senators John Mckinnis, John T. Salazaar, and Ben Nighthorse Campbell.
The arrangement of the red Mountain Project is thematic in two boxes. Both boxes have 5 series that are arranged by a simple hierarchy: first by general Red Mountain Project Grand applications, and second by specific sites within the Red Mountain Project with corresponding grant applications specific to those sites. The boxes are then organized into 5 series consisting of grant applications, surveys, correspondence, task force, case files, and maps and publications. 1998-2006  back to Series list

Series 8:  Old Fort –Hesperus Property--All the materials in this series regard the Old Fort Property at Hesperus. The materials were generated by the Office of Community Services and include group titles like The Old Fort Task Force, The Hesperus Trust, the San Juan Basin Research Center and Elk Research Institute. These all related to development and potential use of the property. Many files contain proposals, contracts and surveys in pursuit of these efforts. These projects inceptions, progress and or failure is recorded in these documents. The records of meetings and memos made by the project members are also included. Another significant group of files consists of preservation projects of the Old Fort Campus and its buildings, these files had blueprints and building assessments. There are proposals to the State Historical Fund and other efforts along these lines in favor of preservation. There are also copies of documents from older periods that relate to these efforts such as old maps, abstracts of titles and other legal papers. 1997-2012 back to Series list
