Introduction/ Scope and contents

This collection contains selected historically significant federal U.S. documents among the Consolidated Ute records in Record Group 75 regarding the former Fort Lewis Indian School near Hesperus, Colorado.  Fort Lewis College photocopied these documents from originals which are held in Lakewood (near Denver, Colo.) by the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration, Rocky Mountain Region. The records (more than two thousand photocopies) include of all of the legible contents of six 500-page letterpress copybooks of copies of outgoing correspondence from the Superintendent of the Fort Lewis Indian School, 1894-1905, and of two ledger volumes of details about employees of the school, 1892-1916, as well as a number of folders of copies of unbound documentThe data in these records documents the School's daily routines, buildings, materials, prices, student and employee conditions, Indian boarding school practices, race relations, and other topics.

Historical note

This section is being reviewed for historical accuracy and cultural sensitivity and will be updated soon.

College Archivist Todd Ellison, assisted by Melanie Ellison, produced these photocopies using Permalife bond paper at the National Archives in Denver in March of 2003.  The accession number is 2004:03002.  Folder data entry was by archival intern Marilyn Stephanie Zuni in March of 2003.  Todd Ellison arranged and described this collection at that time; he last revised this inventory on 7/21/2006.

Series descriptions

Note regarding the organization of this collection:  Materials in this collection are arranged by series.  The series are numbered consecutively.  Because we do not expect to add to this collection, the boxes are numbered in one single numbering scheme starting with 1.

Folder numbers start with 1 in each box.  Items within each series (e.g., correspondence, reports) and within each folder are arranged chronologically, unless noted otherwise.  The series are organized from highest hierarchical level to lowest; from most general to most specific.

Series

1.     Employee records, 1892-1913.  Copies of pages in two oversize ledger books; overlapping dates.  Photocopied from the National Archives’ original bound ledgers.  Each ledger contains page after page (chronological) of employee details.  Only a portion of either ledger's pages were written on.  Arrangement is chronological.  First two folders in document case 1.  Indexed by the Center of Southwest Studies, July 2005 -- online and in hard copy, and also available from the Center for purchase as a Word document.

2.     Fort Lewis School (Breen, Colo.) Superintendent and S.D. Agent, outgoing correspondence to the Commissioner of Indian Affairs, photocopies of letterpress copies, 1894 April 20 – 1906 February 13. Copies of all (even barely) legible letterpress pages from the National Archives’ three original bound ledgers.  Most of the early pages are not legible and were not photocopied.  Some of the ledgers begin with an alphabetical index of names and subjects.  In August of 1903 the superintendent switched from Thomas Breen to W. M. Peterson.  (This series contains no correspondence of their successor, John S. Spear.)  Arrangement is chronological.  In document cases 1 and 2.

3.     Fort Lewis School (Breen, Colo.) Superintendent and S.D. Agent, outgoing correspondence in general, photocopies of letterpress copies, 1904 July 1 – 1906 September 5.  Copies of all (even barely) legible letterpress pages from the National Archives’ three original bound ledgers.  Some of the ledgers begin with an alphabetical index of names and subjects.  In March-April of 1906 the superintendent switched from W. M. Peterson  to John S. Spear.  (This series contains no correspondence of their predecessor, Thomas Breen.)  Arrangement is chronological.  In document cases 3 and 4.
