This collection consists of historical records of the Bayfield Study Club, a women's service organization that has focused especially on support for Bayfield libraries . It includes the club's constitution and bylaws (and those of the Southwest District of the Colorado Federation of Women's Clubs and also of the national Federation), minutes, “yearbooks,” (these contained the service and club membership information), histories, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, photographs, treasurer's records, other records, programs, menus and other ephemera from banquets, etc., and printed materials from the Colorado Federation of Women's Clubs, of which the club was a member previously.
The Bayfield Study Club was established in April of 1930 by fifteen women of the pioneer community of Bayfield, Colorado, just east of Durango. It became affiliated with the Colorado Federation of Women's Clubs in June of that year, but is no longer a member.
Administrative information
Acquisition of this collection: TThe collection was begun with a donation to the Center of Southwest Studies on June 10, 2004 during the annual business meeting of the club in the home of Judy London (accession 2004:06005). Until their donation to the Center in 2004, these records were stored in the homes of officers and members of the club.
About the organization of this collection: The series and boxes are numbered consecutively. The boxes are numbered in one single numbering scheme starting with 1.
Processing information: The collection was arranged and described by Bayfield Study Club volunteers and Fort Lewis College archivist in July of 2004. Ellison prepared this inventory during that same month.
Series descriptions
Arrangement note: Series are numbered consecutively. Box numbers start with 1; folder numbers start with 1 in each box. The series are organized from highest hierarchical level to lowest; from most general to most specific. Items within each series are arranged chronologically, unless noted otherwise. The boxes are numbered in one single numbering scheme starting with 1.
Series:
1. Legal records, 1956-2002. 2 folders in Box 1. Includes the Club's constitution and bylaws, and those of the Southwest District of the Colorado Federation of Women's Clubs, and also of the nationwide 1956 Federation of Women's Clubs.
2. Yearbooks, 1968-2003. 2 folders in Box 1, and attached in the scrapbooks. These described the scheduled programs for that year's upcoming meetings, plus information on officers, members and committees, and the collect that the members read at the beginning of each meeting. In 2004 the club switched from the pamphlet format of the yearbook to letter-size pages in a three-ring binder.
3. Minutes, 1942-2001. 10 folders in boxes 1 and 2. To be added to, as the club's recent minutes become inactive. (Thus, the gap in folder numbering in Box 2.)
4. President's agenda notebooks, 1985-2002, incomplete. 5 folders in Box 2. The President used these to compile the agenda for each meeting.
5. Treasurer's reports and financial records, ca. 1954-1955. 1 folder in Box 2.
6. Scrapbooks, 1930-1978. 7 volumes in 1 records box (Box 3). These contain yearbooks, newspaper clippings and other printed materials, and photos.
7. News clippings and obituaries, 1959-[200-]. 3 folders in Box 4.
8. Histories, 1971 – 2000. 7 folders in Box 4.
9. Photographs, 1916 and 1980s. 3 folders in Box 4.
10. Club service/ scholarships records and correspondence, 1971-2002. 4 folders in Box 4.
