Title: Rio Grande Southern Railroad Engine #74 between Vance Junction and Ophir (Colo.)
Date/circa:  1949-05-29
Photographer: Kindig, R. H.
Subjects: Rio Grande Southern Railroad (Colo.); ; Mountain railroads--Colorado--Ames Slide--Pictorial works; Ames (Colo.)
Notes: Mile Post 042.00 (approximately). Engine #74 is at the Ames Slide, traveling 5 MPH with 5 cars. "This is the Ames slide the #74 is crossing over, this was what closed the railroad prior to Victor A. Miller becoming receiver. They opened the tracks by sending the slide on further down the hill. Turned out beavers were building dams up above and their ponds cause the land to slump." [Source of quote: Robert Herrone, email 3/27/07, with some text he drew from Steven Haworth's RGSRR website.]
