Title:

Counselors at a Ute youth camp
Date/circa:  1964-07
Photographer: Hetzel, Theodore B. (Kennett Square, Pa.)
Subjects: Ute Indians - Colorado|vPictorial works;
Notes: Photo of counselors sitting at a campfire at a Ute youth camp. Two camp buildings and a flagpole are visible in the background. The Camp is at the foot of Chimney Rock, between Durango and Pagosa Springs in southwestern Colorado. It was an annual week-long event for years, conducted under the auspices of the Southern Ute Tribe's Cultural Department, to expose Southern Ute youths to the cultural practices of the Tribe. It was conducted by tribal elders. It has not been operational since about the 1990s, but the Tribe hopes to reinstate it in years to come. (this info is from a phone call to Todd Ellison on 12/6/2006 from Larry Tucker, a Southern Ute tribal member).
