Historical Note back to top
Long before European settlers came to the Southwest, Native American people inhabited the area. The first Spanish settlers arrived
in 1598 and settled along the Rio Grande.
The Southwest was first established as American territory in the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo at the conclusion of the Mexican American war. The treaty
involved the cession of California, New Mexico, and Utah territories as well as the recognition of the annexation of Texas. This territory was eventually
broken up and incorporated in to the states of Texas (1845), California (1850), Colorado (1861), Kansas (1861), Nevada (1864), Wyoming (1890), Utah (1896),
Oklahoma (1907), Arizona (1912), and New Mexico (1912). The political climate changed again in 1868 when the Treaty of 1868 created a 3.5 million acre
reservation designated to the Navajo Native Americans, which in time would see several major and minor expansions. Over time other tribes would also be given
territory. Currently Native reservations occupy 26% of Arizona and 9% of New Mexico. These areas are considered sovereign nations within the United
States.
Today we see a political theory scale ranging from conservatism to liberalism griping the country, including the Southwest. By one definition conservatism
"is a political philosophy based on tradition and social stability, stressing established institutions, and preferring gradual development to abrupt change;
specifically: such a philosophy calling for lower taxes, limited government regulation of business and investing, a strong national defense, and individual
financial responsibility for personal needs (as retirement income or health-care coverage)". Whereas liberalism
"is a political philosophy based on belief in
progress, the essential goodness of the human race, and the autonomy of the individual and standing for the protection of political and civil liberties;
specifically: such a philosophy that considers government as a crucial instrument for amelioration of social inequities (as those involving race, gender,
or class)". These philosophies are represented by the two major political parties of the United States: the Republican Party and the Democratic Party respectfully.
There appears to be a tendency for rural areas to lean toward conservative attitudes, whereas urban areas lean toward more liberal views, though there are
certainly exceptions. One such exception is Durango, Colorado, home of Fort Lewis
College. Durango has seen a shift in recent years toward a more liberal
attitude, despite its rural surroundings.

The collection consists of four record groups (Local, County, State, National) proceeding from the local Durango elections level to national
U.S. Presidential campaigns. Because we expect to add to this collection, we have not
numbered the folders or the boxes. Items within each record group are arranged chronologically.

Printed materials pertaining to political campaigns in Southwest Colorado and the Four Corners
area, representing all levels of government. Includes posters, brochures, leaflets, ephemera,
bumper stickers, and other campaign materials. These printed materials pertain to Durango, Colorado and its immediate locality - the Colorado portion of the Four Corners region -
and all elections in which citizens of La Plata County participate.
To the right is a photo of U.S. Senator John F. Kennedy on the campus of Fort Lewis College in
Durango on Saturday, June 18, 1960 to woo (in the words of LeRoy Goodwin, FLC's PR Director at
the time) delegates at the Colorado State Democratic Party convention being held in the
gymnasium, now the swimming pool (FLC's natatorium).

research purposes. This collection is open to the public for use in the Delaney Southwest
Research Library at the Center of Southwest Studies.

The collection was initially arranged and processed by the archivist and numerous
assistants including Bret Connor, student archival assistant, in 2000. Volunteer Bruce Howard
brought the arrangement and description up to date and Renee Morgan typed
the folder list and assisted with updating the online inventory in the Fall of 2007. Archives
student worker Tia Flippin re-ordered the files into 4 record groups (Local, County, State, National) and edited and reformatted the online inventory in the Fall
of 2011.

The collection has grown through numerous accessions received from Duane Smith and
many others, and much of it from free distribution of the materials.
