Looking Back, Racing Ahead: 50 Years of the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic and Durango Cycling Culture

An annual tradition in Durango for fifty years, the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic has been bringing cyclists together to race the train on Memorial Day weekend since 1972. This exhibit celebrates the second oldest bicycle race in the country and Durango’s unique cycling culture and history.

The exhibit, As Seeds, We Grow: Student Reflections on Resilience explores student identity and cultural resilience with consideration to Fort Lewis College’s history as a federal Indian boarding school. Curated by Elise Boulanger, Osage Nation, Curatorial Fellow and FLC alumna (’21).
