Internships
We offer internship opportunities for enrolled FLC students from any department, to assist in a variety of projects ranging from graphic design to chemistry to technical writing to paleontology. Just get in touch with us to match your skill sets to our needs!
Students should work with their academic department to figure out internship requirements and contact Center staff before registration to discuss internship hours and opportunities.
Archives internships expose students to projects such as digitizing historic photographs and documents, cataloging and database entry, basic document preservation, collection arrangement and description, and handling public research requests. History majors with a Public History emphasis and students who have taken an Archival Theory and Practice course are highly encouraged to apply for internships.
Library and information studies internships provide training and work experience in areas such as taxonomy and classification, Digital Humanities, primary-source research, linked data and the semantic web, database management, social science research and publication, and bibliographic scholarship.
Museum internships at the Center provide participants with training and hands-on experience in a variety of museum tasks, including exhibit development, collections management, and artifact conservation. Student projects are based on the Center's needs and may include artifact handling, data entry, building specialized mounts or storage, artifact inventory, and more.
Volunteering
Our commitment to preserve a record of Southwest history is limited by resources of staff, facilities and time. We highly value adult volunteers who help us continue our work.
Preparing artifacts, papers, and books for use by researchers is the most expensive operation of a repository. Volunteers find great satisfaction in helping the Center tackle specific projects such as photographing a collection of artifacts, entering inventory into a database, scanning photos or documents for digital collections and online exhibitions, indexing primary source documents, making book and periodical collections accessible to users...there are endless projects awaiting an eager volunteer.
