Multilingual storytimes at Delaney Library

The last few weeks have been busy here—the gallery opening was a great success! Today our Library and Archives Technician, Michael Long, and his partner Louise Turner, are expecting their first baby, Silas Mason. Congratulations, and good luck!

February at Delaney

Hane Gathering, Valentine's Day, and Black History Month

Be sure to come by Delaney Library and see what we have going on in February!

This Wednesday at 5 pm please join us for a Hané Gathering (Navajo Story Time), an introduction to Diné language and culture. This is probably the last month we'll be able to tell stories before the weather warms up. Come learn about the Diné Universe (cosmology and astronomy) and play the Stick Game!

Navajo Nation Library Digital Preservation of Oral Histories

Navajo Nation Library Digital Preservation of Oral Histories

Who "owns" cultural property?

Two recent journal articles published by the Smithsonian Magazine and Library Journal brought a local library preservation issue to my attention: the digitization of thousands of hours of Diné oral histories, songs, and stories recorded in the 1960’s and later discovered stored in an empty jail cell. The Navajo Nation Library in Window Rock, Arizona, hopes to preserve the voices of Diné elders whose interviews from half a century ago survive on gradually decaying audio tapes.

What Library Users Want

What Library Users Want

Results of library User Experience (UX) research from fall 2016.

In autumn 2016, Delaney Library undertook a research project on library user experience in order to find if we need to make changes to the content or organization of our collection. We were particularly concerned with the perceptions of Native American students, who are important stakeholders as well as a key user group of the library, representing about 36 percent of the current student population of Fort Lewis College. Survey tools addressed questions about representation, browsability, and problematic material on public shelves.
