Date/circa: | 1900/1930
Photographer: | Walker Art Studio (Montrose, Colo.)
Subjects: | Petroglyphs--Photographs; Montrose County (Colo.)
Notes: | Close-up view of a petroglyph etched into a rock surface. The design appears to be a person riding an animal, such as a horse. However, the horse has approximately ten legs. The petroglyph may have been chalked so that it would be easier to photograph. This practice is no longer allowed. Shavano Valley Rock Art Site is listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places. The site contains numerous rock art panels that date from at least 1000 B.C. through approximately 1881. Two numbers were written on original sleeve E 5 and (more recently) 429. Also written on original sleeve was "Indian Pictures E5-Under Rim-Shavano A-entrance of small cave below look out point Shavano B-"
