LABORATORY DETERMINATION OF SIGNATURE CRITERIA FOR LOCATING AND MONITORING

ABANDONED MINE FIRES (1988). 247 pp.

Performing Organization Name and Address:

U.S. Bureau of Mines, Pittsburgh, PA 15236

Type of Report:  Final Report

Abstract:

Report discusses laboratory method and its theoretical basis for locating and

monitoring abandoned mine fires and presents a comparison of lab and field

results.  Signature criteria were successfully used in locating and monitoring

of fires in abandoned mines.  Laboratory portion of study provided controlled

data against which field data could be evaluated.  The use of signature criteria

in conjunction with communication (suction) testing has significantly improved

the ability to distinguish heated and cold areas in abandoned underground mines.
