Abstract:

Examines visual resources in implementation of Surface Mining Control and

Reclamation Act of 1977 (PL 95-87). Discusses ways which surface mining and

reclamation operations affect visual resources and explores significance of

local visual resources as a reflection of life of community that supports mining

activity. Discusses special issues on land use that emerged in the Act.

Proposes concept to coordinate various interests that should be involved in

implementing the Act. Conclusion is land use and visual resources closely

interrelate and combine aspects of many resources.
