Abstract: 

 

The field trip reflected on current energy issues and problem areas. 

Participants had an opportunity to share views with one another, local leaders,

and energy professionals during 4-1/2 day field trip.  Consistent with 1978 and

1979 objectives, participants focused specifically on ways in which Federal

legislation and regulatory programs could be made more effective or more

responsive to Western needs while, at the same time, achieve important national

policy objectives.

Programs were attended by 48 participants who toured Solar Energy Research

Institute, Colowyo Coal Mine and Rangley Oil Field; met with Utah Abandoned Mine

Reclamation Program representatives; visited some reclaimed mining sites in Park

City; toured Geysers Geothermal Site at Lawrence Livermore and Sandia National

Labs; and visited Altamont Pass wind Farms and Platform Grace.

Abstract: 

 

Trips began in Bakersfield, CA and groups visited Elk Hills Naval Petroleum

Reserve and nearby light oil stream flood operations.  Toured Omar Hill

cogeneration plant and wind farms of Tehachapi, Platform Edith, and discussed

issues on surrounding offshore oil drilling and production.  Visited the Cool

Water Coal Gasification Plant (Solar One & SEGS-1) and listened to discussions

on desert land use issues.  Toured the Cross Gold Mine (Denver CO) and Solar

Energy Research Institute Labs (Golden CO).

Abstract: 

 

36 Congressional and executive aides attended the program and most are engaged

in drafting energy legislation and policy making.  It was concluded that the

sessions have had a minimal impact and required restructuring.  The field trip

portion of the week is the most important part of the program and feedback will

be used with staff recommendations to refine and expand field trip portion. 

Panel sessions:  regional themes (State v. national control of Surface Mining

and Air Quality Issues Surrounding Energy Development and Energy

Transportation).  Field trips involved energy sites in Montana, Wyoming, and

Colorado.
