Abstract:
Flattened
musk turtle is confined to Warrior Basin (northern Alabama). For
several
years the concern about status of the turtle was due to a variety of
causes
including effects from mining/pollution/commercial collecting. Yet other
than
for its reproduction biology and feeding habits, life history of species is
rather
poorly known and hinders conservation efforts.
Intensively surveyed 1 km
sections
of 10 streams Apr-Sept 1985 to determine movements and activity
patterns. Only mine-unaffected population at Sipsey
Fork had a large population
of S.
depressus. Basking platforms and leech
infestation are discussed in
report.
