Abstract:

Lignite is primarily of Wilcox/Claiborne groups.  Average thickness in Wilcox is

about 5 ft but in Claiborne group is thinner.  Contains from 2-4% sulphur,

40-55% moisture, 20-30% ash.  Caloric value is approximately 5000 BTU/lb.  Based

on survey of 2 areas, pasture/forest/cropland are dominant land features.

Considered to have substantial amounts of fish/wildlife/prime farmland (Delta)

in and around potential lignite mining areas.  Only commercialized lignite

utilization option available is conventional combustion.  Options in

developmental stages are gasification and liquefaction.  Summary and conclusions

are presented.
