Atlas to accompany the official records of the Union and Confederate Armies, in
2 oversize flat boxes of oversize

records of volunteer Union soldiers indexes (RG 94) on microfilm.
9 rolls, in microfilm cabinet drawer 6.7. Indexes only, for records of
U.S. soldiers who served in the Civil War in organizations from the
territories of New Mexico (National Archives microfilm publication M242, 4
rolls), Arizona (M532, 1 roll), Colorado (M534, 3 rolls), and Utah (M556, 1
roll). On 16 mm. microfilm.

M 053-066: Charles Wheeler reminiscence and article. A
photocopy of handwritten undated reminiscences of the author's experiences
at the front during the U.S. Civil War, from the time he enlisted in 1861.

F 007: Frank Lake artifacts. Includes a drum used by Daniel M.
Randall when he was a drummer boy in Company3, 20th Regiment, in the Civil
War. Randall, brother of Mrs. Frank Lake (mother of the donor) was age
16 when he enlisted.

Indian wars

Collection I 017: Cherokee Indian Agency records (RG 75) on
microfilm. 14 rolls, in microfilm cabinet drawer 5.8. Records of
agency in Tennessee, including correspondence with officials of the War
Dept., Bureau of Indian Affairs, Federal commissioners in Indian treaty
negotiations, Indian agents, Army officers, Federal and State officials,
and private parties. (M208, 14 rolls) Topics include Cherokee economic
and social conditions; trade and travel; the work of missionaries;
friction between whites and Cherokee and within the tribe; the treaty of
8 July 1817; and the Cherokee migration westward. Some fiscal records
and lists of agents.

investigations records (RG 75) on microfilm. 1 roll, in microfilm
cabinet drawer 6.11. Records relating to the investigations of the
massacre, involving wars with the Cheyenne and Dakota Indians (National
Archives microfilm publication M740).

Collection I 084: Philip H. Sheridan papers on microfilm. 19
rolls, in microfilm cabinet drawer 4.9. Selected roll numbers 3,
17, 43-45, 48, 50, 75-76, 80-84, 86, and 88-91, part of a 104 roll
microform publication. Incomplete. See printed guide in M 129 (microform
finding aids). Philip Henry Sheridan (1831-1888) was an Army
officer and author. He was Chief Quartermaster and chief Commissary of
the Army of the Southwest, 1861-62, and commanded the Department of the
Missouri, 1867-1869 and the Military District of the Missouri,
1869-1878.

Collection I 070: U.S. Office of the Adjutant General selected
general orders and documents re: Fort Lewis (RG 94) on microfilm. 1
roll, in microfilm cabinet drawer 4.9. Early official U.S. government
records pertaining to Fort Lewis as a military post. Begins with
designation of the cantonment established at Pagosa Springs as Camp
Lewis in honor of Lieut. Col. W. H. Lewis "who lost his life in an
engagement with hostile Indians on Sept. 28, 1878, at Famished Woman's
Fork, Kansas" (dated 26 Oct. 1878) and ends with War Dept. turning over
the Fort to the Secretary of the Interior on 16 Feb. 1895. Not in strict
chronological order. A very short roll of microfilm.

Collection I 013: U.S. Secretary of War letters relating to Indian
Affairs (RG 75) on microfilm. 10 rolls, in microfilm cabinet drawers
5.3and 6.5. Correspondence to and from the Secretary of War
pertaining to Indian affairs, prior to establishment of the Bureau of
Indian Affairs: outgoing correspondence, 1800-1824 (M15, 6 r., indexed)
and incoming correspondence, 1800-1823 (M271, 4 rolls). The
Secretary of War was responsible for the conduct of the government's
relations with Indian tribes until 1824 when the Bureau of Indian
Affairs was established within the War Department. In 1849,
responsibility transferred to the new Interior Department.

microfilm. 2 rolls, in microfilm cabinet drawer 4.8. "A campaign
paper published in the interests of the veterans of all Indian wars,
their widows and orphan children" (quoting from the first issue).
A monthly periodical, Dec. 1923-Dec. 28, 1944. Microfilmed by the
Kansas State Historical Society in Topeka, 1958.
Spanish-American War, 1898, and related topics

Spanish American War printed materials.
1/2 document case. Printed materials and other
historical objects compiled in Durango, Colorado, pertaining to the Spanish
American War, 1898-, with particular reference to involvement by residents
of the Four Corners region (including Edward Kimball of Kline, Colorado).

63 volumes. Records of the Durango unit. Includes roll book, ritual
books, services books, etc. of veterans of the Civil and Spanish American
wars who lived in the Durango area.

Assorted artifacts used during the Spanish American war and during the
Philippine insurrection of 1899-1901. These materials include two
bayonets (1 located; located items are noted here by an asterisk*), two
stilettos, a folding saw, a machete in its leather case*, a trench knife*, a
brush hook*, two cartridge belts* (one of which has a brass belt buckle with
the letters MASS on it), a gas mask* (marked as No. 3, donated by George G.
West), two canteens (one located*, marked Arther J. Anderson, Co. F., 5th
Mass. Inf., Hospital Corp U.S.A., Philippine Insurrection, 1898), a mess
kit, a belt with two cartridge pouches and a note inside one pouch stating
"cartridge and money-belt taken from a Filipino soldier in 1899 by J A
Peterson"*, a United States Army blouse, a United States troop flag
belonging to Company G, 3rd Cavalry, a first aid kit, a cartridge, a silk
handkerchief, a cigarette case, a white glove, a medal for service in Cuba,
and a Chevron. [Also in the box which contained the asterisked items, but
not included in the list of this accession: a dark blue uniform jacket
(7102015A) with 5 brass buttons with eagles on them, with a label attached
to one button stating "blue blouse and kid gloves used for dress purposes in
the Philippines by Wm. W. Bay of Durango"--but the blouse and gloves were
not in the box.] From the period of the Spanish-American War and the

World
War I and
punitive expedition into Mexico, 1914-1918

Includes a La Plata County history scrapbook compiled by students of Olive
Cornelius, a folder of Durango Herald issues from the World War I
period, and a scrapbook relating to La Plata County residents who were in
the services in 1918.

C 002: Whitney Mexico Punitive Expedition maps. 6 folders.
Maps relating to the punitive expedition into Mexico in 1916-1917.

Edward Whitney was an engineer on the staff of General John J. Pershing for
the Punitive Expedition to Mexico.

World War II, 1939-1945

War II oral history project records.
1 document case (16 folders). Tapes, transcripts and related
documentation of 15 oral history interviews with Four Corners residents who
directly experienced World War II. Includes one folder of obituaries and
other project planning records. Project organized by Richard Ellis.
Originals of interview releases are in a folder in the collection case file;
archival photocopies (made 11/2000) are in the interview folders.

photos. 1 small box. Stereographs pertaining to Four Corners
residents who directly experienced World War II.

Public Service in Colorado printed materials. 1 document case and
1 records box. Printed materials related to the Civilian Public
Service (CPS) camp #111, 1943-1946, at Jackson Gulch, four miles up a
twisting dirt road from Mancos, Colorado, 1943-1946. This was one of
151 CPS work sites created in the U.S. during World War II, and one of only
4 such camps in Colorado. According to Tom Vaughan, this camp "took up the
work of an earlier Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp at the same
location.

"Dex" Griffith and his wife and others during and after World War II, while
he was in the service in North Africa and Europe. Includes some V-Mail.

After World War II, a
special program for veterans was established, in a vocational
on-the-farm setting; it was funded and supervised by the U.S. Veterans
Administration.

folders 1-4. Most are of E. Reeseman Fryer's travels in Algeria, Tunisia,

Collection includes family snapshots (most are b/w, some are color) of
various sizes, all 4 x 5" or smaller, and a few other items including
drivers license id cards and a few family newspaper clippings. (Cf. oral
history interview #s 248-249 7/6/89.) In his oral history interview # 249
dated 7/6/89, Byron Rohde describes World War II weapons that he was
donating to the Center of Southwest Studies (1989:07002). His oral memoir at
about age 74 dated 7/8/1983 is the Center's tape #248.

Pháo Binh – A Marine artillery officer’s letters from Vietnam, 1966-67.
1 folder (154 pages). Transcriptions of letters Mark Howe wrote home
from Vietnam. Jim Dyer was his commanding officer part of that time.
His mother saved them and he transcribed them recently. Digitally accessible
online (requires a recent version of the Adobe Reader freeware).

Operation Desert Storm / Persian Gulf War, 1990-1991

Collection M 086: National Guard Operation Desert Storm
collection of Southwest Colorado. Compiled and donated by Jay
Farschman, who served with the Colorado National Guard, 928th Ambulance
Company. Personal correspondence, lists, maps, and related artifacts
documenting the involvement of Southwest Colorado reservists in the 928th
Medical Company Ambulance Corps in Operation Desert Storm in the Persian
Gulf.
