068 and C 001:
|
"In the simplest terms these maps were conceived for, and throughout their history have been primarily used by, fire insurance underwriters to determine the risk involved in insuring individual buildings in urban areas against loss in a conflagration. D.A. Sanborn's Company founded 1867 in New York City, was not the first of the type, but since that time has monopolized the industry." (Source: Geography Map Library, California State University Northridge, which "has one of the largest collections of Sanborn Fire Insurance maps in the country.")
Sanborn maps at the Center of Southwest Studies
To access this list:
Search tip: search for keywords using the Edit-> Find in Page (Ctrl+F) feature on your Web browser.
This is a listing of more than 200 Sanborn maps that are available for researchers' use on microfilm (Collection I 068) in the Delaney Southwest Research Library at the Center of Southwest Studies, Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado. (You must be at the Delaney Library to access these.)
In addition (as noted in the following list), the Center has (in Collection C 001, the Southwest Map Collection) two hard copy original Sanborn maps of portions of the City of Durango (Colo.): August 1904 (a photocopy) and April 1931 (original). These too are available for use only in the Delaney Library (ask the archivist if you need to access either of those).
The entries in this listing are arranged geographically by state, then by city, then by the month and year that the Sanborn Company produced the map.
None of these materials circulate.
