Collection M 080, Series 1.4: San Juan National Forest Pagosa Ranger District (Colorado) rangers' logbooks transcriptions |
Years these logbooks were created: 1917-1928.
Marilyn Brown, volunteer for the San Juan Mountains Association, transcribed the 1917-1925 logbooks during 2003-2004. This is a verbatim transcription. Original misspellings, and interpretations or words the transcriber was surmising, are in brackets (for example, [sic] if the misspelling was by the author).

Scope
and contents of Series 1.4:
San Juan National Forest Pagosa Ranger District rangers' diaries
/ logbooks, 1917,
1921, 1924-1925, 1928.
The Center of Southwest Studies collection includes archival photocopies of these 15 small diaries or journals of U.S. Forest Service employee Glenn Dalton, Paul D. Irwin, and other forest service rangers stationed in the area just northwest of Pagosa Springs. All were transcribed during the years 2003 and 2004 by San Juan Mountains Association volunteer Marilyn Brown.
Authorship of these journals: Eight of the journals do not mention the name of the ranger(s) who produced them. Five of the journals were written by a ranger named Glenn Dalton, and one by Paul D. Irwin. Theirs are the only rangers' names found in the logbooks, but it is evident that several people were involved (the handwriting is different in the different logbooks). Some of the rangers' supervisors signed in various places, but those signatures are difficult or impossible to read, and they weren't the journal authors at any rate.
Research value of these journals: These are field notes and daily record of work accomplishments at the Pagosa Springs office. They depict the daily duties of rangers in the young United States Forest Service system. These unpublished journals provide a glimpse, not only into the daily activities of a ranger out in the field, but also to their interactions with the individuals who had grazing permits for sheep on the national forest. One of the important aspects of these journals is that they provide the names of sheepherders and on occasion the allotment that they have a permit. This is especially useful for research, because we are aware of no published documents that recount the story of sheep grazing in this national forest and that also provide names of the individuals on specific allotments were found. These journals provide a base upon which further research can be conducted into the personal lives of the sheepherders and more can be discovered about their families and how long they grazed sheep on their allotments.
The logbooks were thrown out by the U.S. Forest Service, and were retrieved by an employee, Peggy Seavy Jacobson, who took them home. They were loaned to the Center of Southwest Studies on 3/10/2003 (accession 2003:03003) and 4/28/2004 (accession 2004:04016) for photocopying onto Permalife Bond paper and transcription. Peggy Jacobson died on January 1 of a heart attack. This work is presented in honor of her. Her daughter-in-law, Sarah Jacobson, is managing the ranger books and agreed to loan them to the Center until the family decides their ultimate disposition.
One of the children of one of the authors of these logbooks also passed away during the time of the work on this project, Donnie Louise Dalton Miller, born in a Forest Service ranger station north of Pagosa Springs on Feb. 3, 1929, was the daughter of Glen [Glenn] Dalton and Pearl Chism Baker. She grew up in the Animas Valley and was a graduate of Durango High School. She was married to Don L. Miller in Farmington on January 1, 1949. Mrs. Miller was stricken by polio on Dec. 13, 1949. She died on February 27, 2004, at age 75, at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, and was buried Hermosa Park Cemetery. She was survived by a brother, John Dalton of Lakeside, Arizona.

July 29 Sunday
Saw the Lopez men going back with supplies and went out and asked them why they had gone in that part of the Williams creek that had been given to Rodriquez and they said that they had not been told any thing of it. I think it is an oversight in the Lopez man that came with the sheep in not telling them for I have always found the Lopez outfit willing to do what they were told, they said they would move out as soon as they got up with the burrows [sic]

Packed up and went over into the head of Mocca creek, found one bunch feed very good and the sheep look very good came back over into the head of Augh freo the sheep have not got to the head of the canon yet and the feed is very [sic] went down to another camp and over into Big Sand creek and camped for the night. the Hatcher sheep that are in charge of Archuleta and the bunch that Bert Roush is in charge of has not been useing [sic] the range in a stockman like manner. The parks above the forks of the creek have not been grazed they are grubed ?, even the big bunch grass is eaten down it looks like they thought that that was the last grass and they wanted to get it all it is good fishing along by these parks and I think they stayed as long as the sheep would live that is the worst abused range since I have been in the service that I have found camped on Big Sand.
G-S&G 9
Aug 7,
Took in the balance of Big Sand below the forks, there has not been any sheep on the west side of the creek and the park along on the east side have not been eaten out like they have above. this is the range the Labota and Spulman uses. But the west side is supposed to belong to Archuleta’s and the sheep Roush is in charge of and the eating out of the parks was all uncalled for came on and camped for dinner of Piedra and on to Bridge R.S. arrived 5.30 p.m.

Rode from Bridge R.S. to Weminuche up over the range that Babcock uses Little Sand Div. crossed over and up Little Sand creek and found the Teopito ? Martinez camp and sheep, there is a little range left along the creek that is not used yet. and they can’t use the mesa as there is no water there now and they can not use it if it does not rain, I told them to go down on the face of the mountain between Weminuche and Big Sand creek and use that and if it rained to take the sheep on the mesa. they are not pleased with the change of their range and they can not be blamed as it is not as good a range. and is so near that the sheep want to go back and are very hard to hold and they have lost over 200 head that have cut ? on them and started for their old range. it is just a chance if they get in with another bunch and they get them, I think that if their old range is taken away from them that they should be given one as good, as they are old users. came back to Bridge R.S. the portion of the range that Babcock uses is grazed heavy more so than the Martinez part.

Hoffman and Mack told me that the Hatcher sheep were on the Snyder part of Twin Butte Div. Rode up over the range on east side of Williams creek there has not been any sheep on the Hatcher part on east side, rode over the Snyder part and they have been over nearly all of it went to the camp and the sheep but did not find any one. rode over to the Abran Martinez range and picked out sites for water holes that could be fixed with a team in about 5 days to hold enough water during the dry season picked out a site for a bridge at upper end of Twin Butte Div that could be built for approximately $50.00 rode down the sheep drive to Piedra river caught the Quintana sheep at mouth of Spring creek, they were on the state land above Spring creek, and I told them they were on R.P. Hotts land and they took them off came on to Bridge R.S. called Hoffman at Yellowjacket and he said to put the Hatcher sheep off Snyders range and give Snyder the unused portion of the Hatcher range on the east side of Williams creek.

Rode up Big Sand to El Rito Colorow R.S. picked out the out the 40 that I thought would be best posted it with metal Form 394, and started back. I noticed that on the west side of the creek that there was quite a stretch of range that there had been no sheep on and the only reason I could see for it was that it was in the timber and a little steep, all of the Hatcher sheep have gone but the Lobato bunches, I told them to go back and get it if they wanted to stay on longer, the balance of the range that I saw was heavily grazed, went back to camp
