Introduction/ Scope and contents

M 065
DURANGO NATURALIZATION RECORDS
,
1882-1921

.4 linear shelf feet (20 folders, in 1 document case) (approximately 400 items)

This collection consists of documents and certifications regarding persons born elsewhere who were petitioning the La Plata County District Court in Durango, Colorado, for citizenship in the United States, during the first four decades of Durango's history.  Due to their historically significance, the records in this small collection are permanently valuable.  These documents have proven to be useful to genealogists and others seeking biographical data regarding La Plata County pioneers and their families.

Care must be exercised in handling these documents, due to their age and the acidic paper on which they were printed.

Historical note

The creator and/or compiler of these records was the La Plata County Court, which became the District Court of La Plata County in the Sixth Judicial District of Colorado.  It met in Durango during the time of these records' creation.

Administrative information

Acquisition of this collection:  The Center has no documentation regarding the provenance of this material, which was given to the Center through Duane Smith, presumably from the La Plata County Court House at some time in the 1970s or 1980s.

About the organization of this collection:  Materials in this collection are arranged by series.  The series are numbered consecutively.  Because we do not expect to add to this collection, the boxes are numbered in one single numbering scheme starting with 1.  Folder numbers start with 1 in each box.

Processing information:  Center of Southwest Studies Archival Assistant Cindy Jackinsky arranged this collection in September-October, 1996.  This guide was produced by Todd Ellison, Certified Archivist, Center of Southwest Studies, with data entry assistance by Cindy Jackinsky, in October of 1996; last revised October, 2005.
