Mercy Hospital (Durango, Colo.) records
Years this material was created: circa 1896 - 200- (bulk years ____-19__)
Quantity:  approx. 25 linear shelf feet (___  folders, in ___ document cases)

This collection consists of historically significant records, photos, and printed materials pertaining to Mercy Hospital, Mercy Medical Center, and the former Community Hospital of Durango, bulk years 1896-1990.  Records include:

• approximately 16 small ledger volumes of records of patients and scheduled surgeries from 1896-1934 and 9/30/1942-11/15/1977
• a 6" high stack of small notebooks (of examinations, etc.)
• 10 scrapbooks (including several re: Community Hospital and 7 re: Mercy Medical Center, circa 1960-1990)
• 5 document cases of media articles (copies of local newspaper articles mentioning the hospital), 1968-1975, 1977-1978, and 1991-1998 (there's a gap in the cupboard indicating that perhaps there are two additional document cases for the years 1979-1990 that were elsewhere when I looked at the material on 2/21/06)
• printed materials, and photographs (including several albums of color snapshot photos; five shallow drawers containing perhaps several thousand slide transparencies, negatives, prints and 35 mm b/w contact prints; a shelf of b/w 35mm contact prints; and various photos in 5 drawers of a small flat file cabinet which also includes posters and other printed materials), and some digital photos from original photos that are at the Sisters of Mercy motherhouse in Omaha, NE.
• six 2.5" wide legal size document cases containing news clippings and records, and
• 1 records box of budgets, meeting records, departmental goal records, deeds and financial documents (i.e., for capital development).

Administrative information

Arrangement note:  Series are numbered consecutively.  Box numbers start with 1; folder numbers start with 1 in each box.  The series are organized from highest hierarchical level to lowest; from most general to most specific.  Items within each series are arranged chronologically, unless noted otherwise.  The boxes are numbered in one single numbering scheme starting with 1.

Acquisition information:  The bulk of the collection is comprised of two accessions: 2006:067 and 2006:082, both donated by Mercy Regional Medical Center, in May and June of 2006, as part of that hospital's move to its new campus in Grandview, east of the center of Durango.

Processing informationThe collection was arranged and described by several Mercy Hospital volunteers under the direction of J. Todd Ellison, Archivist, starting in the summer of 2006 and ongoing.  Linda Fargo organized newspaper clippings and made preservation photocopies.  Pat Jetton and Beverly Darmour have been identifying, rehousing, arranging and describing the photos in the collection.  Bruce Howard, a retired dermatologist, entered data from the early patient ledgers and analyzed that data. Part of Dr. Howard's work was to organize the diagnoses and operations from 1896 to 1913 in accordance with the ICD-9 classification of diagnoses and procedures which is used in hospitals currently, removing the redundancies in the original entries (which are still listed in the Center's database, though).

The online inventory was produced by Ellison.  The historical sketch was prepared by _________________.
