Among all of the collections on this list, the Myra Ellen Jenkins collection may be the single most helpful collection for most researchers.  Its inventory is accessible on the Web at http://swcenter.fortlewis.edu/inventory/Jenkins.htm


Collection I 026         Period of materials: 1251-1884 

Title: Antiquas posesiones Espanolas de America documents on microfiche

Creator: Torres de Mendoza, Luis, 1830-1881, editor. 

Volume:  250 microfiche         Location at Delaney Library: compact shelving accessible shelf 38.8

Content: Colleccion de Documentos Ineditos, Relativos al Describrimiento, Conquista y Organizacion de las Antiquas Posesiones Espanolas de  America y Oceana.  42 volumes on microfiche.  Reprinted in 1967 by Microcard Editions, Inc. (N.Y.) 

Note: For the most part, this collection appears to have been published  without any preconceived plan for arranging or describing the  documents systematically.  A chronological scheme was begun with volume 36, but was not implemented consistently.


Collection I 007         Period of materials: 1769-1803

Title: Cabildo records and deliberations on microfilm

Creator: Cabildo (New Orleans)

Volume:  7 rolls

Content: A digest of the Acts and Deliberations of the Spanish government in New Orleans.  Transcripts, in English (4 rolls) and Spanish (3 rolls).

Location note:  This collection was borrowed by a former Fort Lewis College professor and is not presently available.  Please inform staff if you would like to use it.

Title: Durango oral histories

Creator: various

Volume:  3 document cases

Content: Tapes of interviews pertaining to life in Durango, Colorado. Especially, those conducted by Duane A. Smith as part of his research for his books on Durango and vicinity.  Most of these interviews are cataloged at an item level in the Talon OPAC; do a keyword search including "oral history" and Durango.

Title: Early U.S. overseas archives finding aids on microfilm

Content: Descriptive guides to U.S. historical records in archives elsewhere: Descriptive Catalogue of the Documents relating to the History of the U.S. in the Archivo General de Indias at Seville (1916); List of Documents in Spanish Archives (1910), Guide to Manuscript Materials for the History of the U.S. to 1783 (2 volumes); Guide to the Materials in the London Archives for the History of the U.S. since 1783, and Guide to the Materials for the History of the U.S. in the Principal Archives of Mexico.


Title: Farmington (N.M.) oral histories

Volume:  34 audiocassettes

Content: Recordings of interviews made for a project entitled "Farmington, New Mexico, 1945-1955: A decade of change in a western community."  

Access restricted:  Those producing these interviews did not obtain releases, thus this material is not yet accessible.


Collection F 039

Title: Gutman artifacts collection

Creator: Gutman, J. A., Mrs., collector

Content: Ceramics and other three-dimensional objects from Mexico.  All of the items were estimated [by Homer Root] to be at least 100 years old at the time the loan was made (circa mid-1960s).

Note: An elderly lady at the time of the loan, Mrs. J. A. Gutman was a former resident of New Mexico.  She gave the collection to Mrs. Baughetee, daughter of former Durango doctor B. J. Ochsner, who in turn loaned it to the College museum.

Title: Historical documents relating to New Mexico, Nueva Vizcayo and approaches thereto, to 1773, on microfilm

Creator: Bandelier, Adolph and Fanny, compilers

Volume:  1 roll        Location in the Delaney Library:  microfilm cabinet drawer 4.8

Content: Spanish texts and English translations.  Edited by Charles W. Hackett.  We only have volume 2, which begins with section III. Nueva Vizcaya in the 17th century.

Note:     Volumes 1 and 3 are out of print in book form, but are on ultrafiche at Fort Lewis College Periodicals in Reed Library on the Microbook Library of American Civilization.

Collection M 127         Period of materials: 1500-1993

Title: Myra Ellen Jenkins collection

Creator: Jenkins, Myra Ellen, compiler

Volume:  more than 112 document cases and other size boxes

Content: Research materials compiled by Myra Jenkins on the history of the Spanish Southwest, especially New Mexico.  Bulk on land grants and water rights of Pueblo Indians, and New Mexico history. (62.5 linear shelf feet before processing in the summer of 1994 by Cindy Jackinsky.)

Note: Myra Ellen Jenkins died in June of 1993 (obituary in Denver Post 6/28/93).  Dr. Jenkins bequeathed her research collection to the Center in her will.  She was long the state historian of New Mexico and was a friend and colleague of the Center’s founding director, Dr. Robert Delaney.

Benjovsky, compiler, 1947 (2 fiche); Geology of the Questa Molybdenum (Moly)  Mine Area, Taos County, New Mexico, by John H. Schilling, 1956 (2 fiche); and Geology and mineral resources of Rio Arriba County, N.M., by Edward Bingler, 1968 (4 fiche).

Title: Parral Archives on microfilm

Creator: Parral (Mexico).  Archivo.

Volume:  324 rolls        Location in the Delaney Library:  microfilm cabinet drawers 4.10 through 5.2

Content: El Archivo de Hidalgo del Parral (Chihuahua, Mexico); microfilmed handwritten documents in old Spanish from Spanish Colonial period, Nueva Vizcaya.  These are records of the city of Parral, a frontier silver mining town in northern Mexico.  Over 360,000 pages.  Indexed.  A rich source of documentation for many aspects of frontier life in northern and western Mexico and southwestern U.S. during the Spanish Colonial Era (1631-1821).  See Spanish hardcopy index (428 pages) in collection M 129 (on top of the microfilm cabinet).

Collection C 001         Period of materials: 1852-1990 

Title: Southwest map collection

Volume:  ca. 90 maps 

Content: A diversified collection pertaining to all facets of the Southwest:  historical, Indian settlements, geographic and geological surveys, railroads, mining, etc.  Arranged by these and other broad topics.  Includes a Southwestern Colorado expedition map, ca. 1874-75.  See also the Cutter map collection, which includes digitized access to early world maps that depict the Southwest.

Title: Southwest newspapers on microfilm: New Mexican

Volume:  239 rolls        Location in the Delaney Library:  microfilm cabinet drawers 2.7 through 2.9

Content: Produced as part of a New Mexico History Library project.  Includes various other newspaper titles until 2 January 1900 (i.e., roll numbers 1- 62).  The Center of Southwest Studies has this title through 29 April 1960.  Some are in Spanish; most are in English.


Collection U 004

Title: Southwest oral histories

Creator: various

Volume:  7 document cases

Content: Tapes, transcripts, abstracts and related documentation of interviews with persons of the Southwest U.S.  Interviews of a more specific nature are filed in the more particular oral history collections (U001, U002, U003, U008, and U010 through U013).  Most of these interviews are cataloged at an item level in the Talon OPAC; do a keyword search including "oral history".

Title: Southwest textiles collection

Content: Textiles woven in the Southwest U.S. by Navajo Indians, Hispanic Americans, and others.  Digital images are viewable online.


Collection C 007

Title: Southwest USGS maps collection

Creator: U.S.  Geological Survey

Volume:  more than 2,500 maps

Content: U.S. Geographic Survey topographic quadrangle maps, both 7.5 minute and 15 minute, of regions in Arizona, southern California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah.  Most are marked duplicate; they were previously in the Reed Library collection.


Collection I 004         Period of materials: 1621-1821

Title: Spanish Archives of New Mexico on microfilm

Creator: State of New Mexico.  Records Center.

Volume:  22 rolls        Location in the Delaney Library:  microfilm cabinet drawers 4.3 and 4.4

Content: These are the official records of Spanish central and local government, including census and court records.  Edited by Myra Ellen Jenkins.  Contains information on all subjects during the period of Spanish sovereignty over New Mexico.  The records (the originals are housed at the New Mexico Records Center and Archives in Santa Fe) were filmed chronologically, except for miscellany (1680-1821) on roll 21 and orders and decrees (1656-1821) on roll 22.  See the Center's microform collections finding aids (request this from Collection M 129)for a guide to the collection (1967; 23 pages) and calendar (1968; 182 pages); both printed volumes were produced by Myra Ellen Jenkins.

Title: Spanish manuscripts

Volume: 2 document cases

Content: Includes draft typescripts (in a mixture of Spanish and English) of a biography of Father Francisco, missionary from Spain; the Catholic Church in Utah/ by Bishop Scanlon, 1909; and a play about the Pastores (traditional Hispano Christmas pageantry).

Volume:  120 rolls        Location in the Delaney Library:  microfilm cabinet drawers 7.2 and 7.3

Content: Letters sent, 1849-90 (M1072, 7 rolls); letters received, 1865-90; (M1088, 65 rolls); registers of letters received, 1865-90 (M1097, 11 rolls), 1848-53 (M1102, 7 rolls) and 1854-65 (M1120, 30 rolls).  Printed guides to M1072, M1088, M1097 and M1120 (4 vols.) are in M 129 on top of the microfilm cabinet.  Also includes letters sent by the Post Commander at Fort Bayard, N.M., 1888-1897 (T320, 3 rolls).

Title: Whitney Mexico Punitive Expedition collection
