Introduction/ Scope and contents

These are Alden C. Hayes' photographic views (color slides) of work at archaeological sites in the Four Corners vicinity.  Approximately half of these images document excavations 1965-1968 (photos through 1970) at Gran Quivira in central New Mexico.  A little less than half of them pertain to Mesa Verde National Park (Colo.), especially the Wetherill Archaeological Project, circa 1958-1965.  Other views are of Chaco Canyon (Chaco Culture National Historical Park, N.M.), circa 1966-1975, and of work at Pecos National Historical Park (near Santa Fe, N.M.), circa 1966-1970.  Other images are of Ute pictographs in Mancos Canyon (Colo.) that Hayes photographed in April of 1962.

Archaeologists and other persons pictured in these slides include (alphabetically listed): Doug Anderson, Jose Baca, Robert "Bob" Barnes, Ray Begay, Frank Bluehorse, Bob Boyle, George S. Cattanach, Clifford Chappel, Dave Decker, Gary Fulfer, Maxine Gachupin, Les Goff, Jerry Greene, Tomas Guantara, Mark Hadley, David Hannah, Alden Hayes himself, Gretchen Hayes, Marc Hayes, George King, Gordon Lalander, James Lancaster, Richard Lee, Robert Lister, Jimmy Lopez, Tom Lyons, Guy Matthews, Jerome "Jerry" Melbye, Fred Momy, Kee Nez, Willis Claw Nez, Robert F. Nichols, Carolyn Osborne, Douglas Osborne, Paul Rasor, Don Ripley, Arthur H. Rohn, Evelyn Sinclair, Donald Smith, Chester Thomas, Gordon Vivian, Bill Welles, Paul Willic, Bill Wode, and Jon Young.

Note to the researcher: some of these images may be considered sensitive in terms of NAGPRA (Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act).  The researcher is advised to be aware of this when contemplating using images in this collection.

Biographical note

Alden Hayes was a prominent southwestern archaeologist.  As Gary Matlock, Supervisory Archaeologist (Ret.) of the U.S. Forest Service wrote in his appraisal of the textual portions of the Hayes collection, Mr. Hayes worked for most of his career "as a researcher for the National Park Service and supervised or worked on a number of major excavation and research projects for them."  Those projects included the Wetherill Mesa Project and others mentioned in the scope and contents note above.

Administrative information

Arrangement note: The Center retained the creator's original order of these slides, which is basically chronological.

Acquisition information:  Alden C. Hayes designated the Center of Southwest Studies as the repository for his library of books, manuscripts, research notes, personal correspondence, photos and other miscellaneous materials.  The slide collection was donated to the Center of Southwest Studies by deed of gift by Mr. Hayes (then of Portal, Arizona) on June 30, 1998; its accession number is 1998:06020.

Processing informationThis guide was produced by Todd Ellison, Certified Archivist, Center of Southwest Studies, in October of  2004.  Data entry was by student archival assistant Andrew Hayes (no relationship to Alden Hayes) in September of 2004.  The folder list was prepared by student archival assistant Michael Gartley on October 21, 2004.  For the sake of brevity in the online presentation, the following list does not contain all of the detailed information that the Center has recorded in an Access database to describe the content of these slides.  In December of 2004, Ellison began to provide online digital access to a few of these images (an ongoing process as resources permit).
