- The Delaney Library has a collection (C
008) of Southwest atlases, which include the published
Geologic Atlases of the U.S., in 6 oversize flat boxes of oversize
folio volumes of geological maps, circa 1890s, which must be handled with
care b/c they're so brittle. Shelved in room SW 166 on 34.3 - 34.7 (ask for
them and give this shelf info to the Delaney Library staff).

mid-1870s (includes some digital images). Includes --20 maps in flat file
drawer 2.30. Maps from the Geological and Geographical Survey of the
Territories. Includes: Geological and Geographical Atlas of Colorado and
portions of adjacent territory/ by F. V. Hayden, 1877 (containing
topographic, geological and economic maps and panoramic views).

Contents: roll 1: name index to series 362, letters sent (1 volume); letters
sent 1874-83 (7 volume). Roll 2 starts with copies of letters sent by
Wheeler 1878 Jan. 2; press copies of letters sent by Capt. Wheeler
1882-83 (1 volume); register of letters sent by Ogden, Utah, field office
1879 Jan.-Apr.; name index of letters received 1874-82 (1 volume); register
of letters sent by Ogden office 1879 Jan.-April. The
National
Archives
microfilmed these records for the University of
Utah Western History Center in April of 1969.

Letters received by John Wesley Powell, Director of the Geological and
Geographical Survey of the Rocky Mountain Region (National
Archives microfilm publication
M156). The
Survey was authorized by a joint resolution of Congress in 1868. Initially,
the Survey largely explored the Colorado River. As federal appropriations
increased, the scope of the project was broadened to include investigations
of the region's geography, geology, ethnology, and natural sciences.

29 rolls, in microfilm cabinet 5, drawers 7 and.8. Letters sent by the U.S.G.S. (National Archives microfilm publication M152). Indexed. In 1879 Congress created the U.S.G.S., a natural
extension of the Hayden, Powell, Wheeler and King surveys. Operating in the
western territories, the Survey classified public lands, studied geological
structure and natural resources, and issued maps and publications.
