Introduction/ Scope and contents

M 199
Evans-Crumbo mining collection inventory
1905-1980 (bulk 1955-1980)
1.25 linear shelf feet (in 3 document cases) (153 folders)

These are records and correspondence, etc., (many of them, photocopies, from an age when photocopying was rather primitive) regarding various mining operations in Arizona, New Mexico, and Nevada, ca. 1905-197-, especially by those of Max Evans and Woody Crumbo, partners in Taos Uranium and Exploration, Co.; Taos Minerals Co.; and Solar Minerals.  (Scarcely any of the records pertain directly to Mr. Crumbo.)

Historical/ biographical note

Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Crumbo was a Potawatomie artist; the first Indian artist of note to work in oils.  He had over 500 paintings in museums before he was 40 years old.  Born in Lexington, Oklahoma, he lived with a Creek Indian family as a boy, and graduated from Bacone Indian College in Muskogee, Oklahoma where he became Director of the Art Department a week after he graduated with his degree.  He was a principal art buyer for the Thomas Gilcrease Foundation in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  Mr. Crumbo selected and purchased a large collection representing the Taos Art Colony and its founders.  He was adopted into many tribes including the Sioux and Creeks, and taught at Oklahoma University and Wichita State University.  He was Mr. Evans’ artistic mentor and they became mining full partners and were headquartered in Taos, New Mexico.  Company names included: Taos Uranium and Exploration, Co.; Taos Minerals Co.; and Solar Minerals.

Administrative information

Acquisition of this collection:  This collection is the Center of Southwest Studies' accession 2002:10004, donated by Max Evans on October 4, 2002

About the organization of this collection:  Because we do not expect to add to this collection, the boxes are numbered in one single numbering scheme starting with 1, and there is a single alphabetically arranged series of subject files.

Processing information:  In the fall of 2002, students in Todd Ellison's SW 340 Archives class arranged and described this collection at the Southwest Studies, under his supervision.  Southwest Studies student library intern Bertina Nez prepared the folder list (which Ellison edited), in January-February of 2003.  This inventory was produced by Todd Ellison in February of 2003 (last revised October 2005).
