Durango (Colo.) Police Ledgers index
List of arrests, 1929-1939, by date of arrest

This is a descriptive listing of 1,586 arrest records of the Durango Police from the period from October 1, 1929 through December 20, 1939. See also the related web pages for the listing of 1,308 records from the arrests ledger dated from May 29, 1881 to June 13, 1885 (one report is sorted by name; the other is sorted by arrest date), and 1,971 records for the period from January 1, 1940 through October 3, 1949. These three ledgers (plus a 4th ledger that served as an index for the 1929-1949 records before we produced this inventory in 2004) containing these records (which are part of the Durango (Colo.) city government records Collection M 027 at the Center) are available for researchers' use in the Delaney Southwest Research Library at the Center of Southwest Studies, Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado. However, as large as it is (this list, when printed, is approximately 44 pages), yet this cannot be considered a comprehensive list of all Durango arrests described in the Archives -- it only covers two periods during some of the early days of Durango's history as a city.

To access this list: the entries in these lists are arranged alphabetically by the name of the person charged -- and then sorted by date of the arrests of that person.

Volume 1: Police Judge record book, 5/29/1881-6/29/1885, 510 pages; pages 402-403 are blank.
Volume 2: Police record of arrests, Book 1 maintained by Durango Chief of Police Leo McCartney, 10/1/1929-1/1/1943, 495 pages.
Volume 3: Police record of arrests, Book 2 maintained by Durango Chief of Police Leo McCartney, 1/5/1943-4/3/1949 and one entry dated 10/3/1949, 500 pages; the following pages are blank: 355-425, 427-438 (missing; evidently torn out), 456-462, and 468-500; pages 426 and 439-455 are an index of traffic arrests, 1943-1949; pages 463-467 are an index of drunken driving arrests for those years.
Volume 4: Personal-name index of police record of arrests maintained by Durango Chief of Police Leo McCartney, 1929-1949 (index to Volumes 2 and 3, which were his Books 1 and 2).

Arrest date notes:

Some of the arrest dates were only entered in the ledger books with the month and year; in these cases, we used the first of the month as the assigned date, for database sorting purposes.
Some of the arrests were undated in the ledger books; to estimate the date, we used a date close to the surrounding dated ledger entries. All of these undated records were in Volume 1, and include the following:
   Pages 460-463 (between 12/15/1884 and 12/19/1884)
   Page 454 (between 11/20/1884 and 12/1/1884)
   Page 470 (between 1/12/1885 and 1/22/1885)
   Page 474 (circa 2/12/1885)
   Page 478 (between 3/21/1885 and 4/4/1885)
   Page 481 (between 4/20/1885 and 4/24/1885)
The frequently noted charge of "Violating section 7 of ordinance no. 2" refers to :___________. This list includes 368 such charges. Two of the other ordinance violations cited are "Violating section 2 of ordinance no. 7" and "Violating section 21 of ordinance no. 2."

None of these documents circulate. They must be used in the Research Room at the Delaney Library.
