Surface Mining Regulation and Reclamation:
Bibliography and
Abstracts of Research Reports
Main Page

Completed between Fiscal Years 1978 and 1998.

Access note: This is a compilation of two bibliographies, produced in 1995 and 1999.  Items abstracted in the 1995 bibliography of works published 1978-1991 (156 pages as a text file; or if you prefer, you can view the same thing on 237 pages as an htm file) are available from the U.S. National Technical Information Service.  Items abstracted in the 1999 bibliography of works published 1991-1998 (52 pages as a text file) must be obtained from Joe Galetovic at the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (U.S. Department of the Interior).  Therefore, to know which source to consult for a particular item you will need to know which of the two bibliographies described it.

Introduction

This file contains abstracts to aid researchers in identifying technical reports related to coal mining and reclamation which are available from the U.S. Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, and from the National Technical Information Service (NTIS). (See Access note above; items that are available from the one source are NOT available from the other source.)

These documents report research completed under contract to the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSM), between fiscal years of 1978 and 1991, and between the years 1991 and 1998.  OSM provided these reports to NTIS as a part of its growing awareness of the need to ensure that state regulatory authorities, the coal industry, university researchers, and the public have complete access to all relevant research funded by OSM since the inception of its Title V Applied Research Program.  This report is meant to serve as a guide to this technology transfer initiative.   The 1995 file supplements and updates for the Surface Mining Regulation and Reclamation: Bibliography of Research Reports are available from the National Technical Information Service, 1978-1991, Portland, ME: University of Southern Maine, July 1995. 237 pp. [directly available at: http://www.usm.maine.edu/~pos/osmdos.txt].  The 1999 file supplements and updates for the Surface Mining Regulation and Reclamation: Bibliography of Research Reports are available from the University of Southern Maine [directly available on the Web at: http://www.usm.maine.edu/~pos/osm2.txt].

Guide to Use

The abstracts are arranged by broad topic (the earlier abstracts utilize the OSM library report number).

The files may be searched for any keyword by downloading them into a word processing program and using the Search key (F2).  Complementary copies of all documents may be requested from: Joe R. Galetovic, Technical Coordinator, Office of Technology Transfer, Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, U.S. Department of the Interior, P.O. Box 46667 [physical address: 1999 Broadway, Suite 3320], Denver, CO  80201-6667.  Email: jgaletov@osmre.gov

All documents can be requested from the National Technical Information Service, 5825 Port Royal Road, Springfield, Virginia 22161 (Sales Desk Telephone 703-487-4650).  The NTIS accession numbers and prices have been included for almost all reports.  In some cases, accession numbers and prices were unavailable at the time of printing this report.  The reports, which have been provided to NTIS, are included for completeness and can be obtained by using the title of the report for identification.

In addition, copies of OSM reports which have been provided to NTIS are available from NTIS international dealers located in England, India, Italy, and Japan.  Therefore, requests from overseas customers should be made to the NTIS International Affairs Office (Telephone 703-487-4753).  This office will provide complete ordering information and assistance.

You may click here for a large file containing all of these abstracts that were described in the 1999 bibliography.   These two files will be slower to load than the individual files of abstracts (above), but can be searched using the Edit- Find in Page (Ctrl+F) feature on your Web browser.

The abstracts files may also be searched by author or name of organization preparing a report, if known, or a section of the Code of Federal Regulations applicable to surface mining, for example: 30 CFR 816.  The bibliographies are also available on floppy disc from: Michael S. Hamilton, Department of Political Science, University of Southern Maine, Portland, Maine, USA 04104.   Please send him a 3.5" floppy disc in appropriate mailer, with return postage.

These bibliographies were edited and prepared for online presentation by Michael S. Hamilton and Dale Barrett, University of Southern Maine, P.O. Box 9300, Portland, Maine, 04104.  Html conversion and formatting was done in the fall of 1999 by student archival assistant Jamie Pickering (edited by Todd Ellison, Archivist), at the Center of Southwest Studies, Fort Lewis College, 1000 Rim Dr., Durango, CO 81301-3999.  Revised Nov. 18, 1999, by Todd Ellison, C.A.
