Overview of oral history work at the Center of Southwest Studies:
Oral history can be an effective means of filling in gaps in the documentation of our region's history. It also can be an intensely meaningful experience for both the narrator and the interviewer. The Center of Southwest Studies has collected oral histories since before the time of the Center's inception in 1964. Interviews date from 1958 to the present. All of them pertain to the Center's collection focus which is, for the most part, Fort Lewis College, the Four Corners region, and Indians of the Southwest. The collection is managed with a computer database that is searchable by name of the person interviewed, interview dates and topics, and a host of other access points. It is particularly useful for the would-be interviewer to consult this information before selecting a person to interview. The collection now includes more than 600 interviews (over 100 of them specifically about Durango's history). Some of the interviews are the result of the Center's partnerships with the National Forest Service, Rural Video Access (Durango), and other organizations.  One way to locate a particular interview is to go to the College Library's Online Public Access Catalog (http://opac.fortlewis.edu/ on the Web) and do a keyword search for "oral history interview" and any relevant topical, geographical, or personal names.  To view broad descriptions of collections of oral history interviews, you can do a call number search for "collu".

The Center's oral history program objectives are to produce and provide access to excellent oral histories by adhering to professional standards, as described in its oral history policy (form SW-52), adopted on July 21, 1995. Each interview accepted for the Center's collection must be accompanied by a signed release (form SW-6) and a completed interview abstract (form SW-21). Center staff and volunteers transcribe tapes as time and finances allow, and in prioritized order to reflect the Center's mission, with interviews of individuals associated with Fort Lewis College receiving highest priority.

The program is supported by an upper-level introductory course on oral history taught by the College Archivist.  Members of the community are invited to inquire with the Admissions Office regarding enrolling in that class. In addition, the Archivist provides help to individuals requesting additional guidance.

All of the Center of Southwest Studies' holdings, including the oral history materials, are available to the public for use in the Center's Southwest Research Library, subject to the Center's General Restriction Policy and any additional restrictions particular to the materials. Consult the Center's website at http://swcenter.fortlewis.edu/about.htm#Hours: or contact the Archives Manager (Nik Kendziorski, 970-247-7126) for hours and availability.  It is often helpful to schedule research visits ahead of time, especially when traveling from afar.
