The Delaney Library at the Center of Southwest Studies provides hands-on archival training for students, interns, and volunteers. 
Some of the project possibilities are listed below on this page.


 

 Arranging and describing historically significant materials:

  1. Richard Ellis papers (collection M 063) -- arrange and describe (currently in progress)
  2. Robert Delaney papers (collection M 173, in SW 166 36.2-36.6) -- arrange and describe
  3. Loose miscellaneous hard-copy Southwest newspapers  (collection M 088, in SW 024 section 151) -- arrange and enter into newspapers.mdb database
  4. FLC Archives (collection M 001)
         1.    Clip the early Independent newspapers for FLC clippings files
         2.    Identify FLC-Announce-L printouts by Series #
         3.    File both sets of FLC-Announce-L printouts   
  5. Ed Zink mountain biking papers (collection M 192) (currently in progress/Nicholas)
       
    1.    Finish arranging and describe, and type in all folder titles

Digitizing historical photos and documents and creating metadata:

  1. Durango Herald photonegatives (collection P 011) -- digitize new additions and (ongoing/Stephanie) create item-level records.
  2. Western Colorado Power Company photographs  (collection P009)  -- arrange and describe (ongoing/ Esther) and then digitize 1 box of glass plate negatives.
  3. Benjamin J. Ochsner photographs (collection P010) --  digitize 400 large photoprints.
  4. Nina Heald Webber Southwest Colorado postcards  (collection M 194) -- digitize new additions and create item-level records.
  5. Theodore Hetzel photo collection of Native America (collection P 003)
    1. Enter a descriptive record about each photo in the Center's database of images (this may involve further identification of an image).
    2. Digitize additional photos from the collection.
  6. Deeds of gift to be scanned and saved as PDF/A files.

 

 

Preserving special collections:

 

  1. Training in use of disaster plan for the building.
  2. Monitor and document temperature and humidity and light levels in collection areas.
  3. Research and specify self-standing dehumidification equipment.

 

 

Enhancing reference and access services:

 

  1. Create additional pathfinders to guide researchers to sources in collections at the Center, in the following and/or other topics: local (Durango) history, women's history, politics and government.
  2. Update the archives' statistical analysis of collection use records and researcher registration forms.
  3. Update MARC records in the Center's collections management database for future migration into the College's Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC).
  4. Add links to digital images and online inventories in the OPAC.

 

 

Accessioning, acquiring and appraising collections:

  1. Assist with entering new accessions into the Center's accessions database.
  2. Conduct field work to identify and acquire materials in accordance with the Center's documentation strategy.
  3. Visually document the campus and Main Avenue (Durango).

 

 

Website enhancements:

 

  1. Add to online inventories for recently processed collections.  (See above.)
  2. Enhance researchers' access to digital images online.
  3. Update and enhance listings in the Southwest newspapers holdings of the Center.
  4. Develop interactive capabilities of the archival pages at swcenter.fortlewis.edu

 


Outreach:

 

  1. Revise the Center's brochure of information for potential donors.
  2. Design Southwest Research Library rack cards.
  3. Develop traveling history trunk(s) to take to local schools, etc.

 
 

Oral history interviewing:

 

  1. Transcribe interview #306 of William Turner by Duane Smith.
  2. Finish transcribing Louis L'Amour broadcast tape #452 and do through #456 -- of Indian peace treaty ceremonies in Ignacio.
  3. Women's history interview project.
  4. Environmental history interview project.
  5. Local sports and recreation interview project.
