Full-Time Archival Internship Guidelines

For the consideration of professional development without salary, wages, or compensation, the Archival Intern will work with and report to the Archivist of the Center of Southwest Studies full-time for a minimum of 160 hours.

More particularly:

1.        The Intern will work, on average, 40 hours per week.  The period of work is negotiable.

2.        Under the collaborative leadership of the Archivist, the Intern will assist with various and sundry of the broad gamut of archival tasks at the Center of Southwest Studies, including arrangement and description, preservation, reference and access service, acquisitions and appraisal of collections, accessioning, Fort Lewis College records management, oral history interviewing, outreach, institutional planning, and work on the Center's web site.   The work will be guided by use of the Center of Southwest Studies' Archival Procedure Manual.

3.        The Intern will complete an arrangement and description project on a discrete collection/ unit of records (the Archivist will select a project that can be finished during the internship period).  Click here for a partial list of collection processing possibilities.

4.        The Intern will complete a preservation project (for example, in the area of environmental monitoring, holdings maintenance, reformatting, and digitization for access so as to preserve the originals).

5.        The Intern will participate in the Archives and Archivists discussion list on the Internet, and in regular meetings of the Center of Southwest Studies staff.

6.        The Intern will participate in any meetings of the Southwest Studies Advisory Committee, the Southwest Accessions/ Deaccessions Committee, and related committees.

7.        The Intern will assist the Archivist in the supervision of any student archival assistant workers.

8.        Project Director Todd Ellison will be available throughout the course of the Internship for consultation and mentoring with the Intern, and will be directly responsible for the supervision of the Intern's work.

9.        Any historical research the Intern chooses to do must be done on the Intern's own personal time, and research at the Center must be done under the same terms as those that apply to a non-staff researcher (i.e., conducted in the designated research areas and the designated research room hours).

10.     This is a work for hire; thus, all the data files and other products of this work will adhere and to and remain with the Center of Southwest Studies.

11.     The Intern is responsible to submit a final report to the Archivist upon the completion of the internship.

To apply:

Internships are awarded through a competitive process, based on the evaluation of the Center of Southwest Studies staff functioning as a search committee.  To apply, specify which of the three internship opportunities you are interested in, and mail the following three items to the Center of Southwest Studies, Fort Lewis College, 1000 Rim Dr., Durango, CO 81301-3999:

  1. Letter of interest (2-3 pages).
  2. Two letters of reference.
  3. Resume.

In addition, if this internship is to count for credit, the applicant will have to arrange for the process to establish the Archivist as the instructor of record for the purpose of assigning a grade for the internship.  Ethnic minorities are encouraged to apply, as are home school graduates.  We recognize that an internship such as this can be a means of acquiring necessary skills and experience outside of the traditional academic setting.
