Recognizing that sometimes it is difficult for a distant researcher to locate necessary sources close by, the Center has agreed to loan certain of its special collections microfilms for non-commercial use by scholars for personal research at professionally managed libraries and archives for a period generally not to exceed 3 weeks, but only if the Center is able to replace the loaned microfilm if that becomes necessary. The Center's Sanborn maps microfilms are not available for loan, nor are microfilms that are part of a series. Generally, the loan is of newspapers on microfilm. The researcher will mail the Center a separate check payable to Center of Southwest Studies for a deposit of $100 per roll, along with a check in payment of the shipping and handling of the microfilm ($8.00 for the first roll, plus $3 for each additional roll--if ordered and shipped in the same shipping box), and this completed and signed form, and a self-addressed stamped envelope if the researcher desires to receive the unused deposit check back (in cases where the researcher returned the microfilm unscratched and in all wise undamaged). The researcher is responsible to pay for the return shipping, via First Class Mail. If you prefer, you may use the Center of Southwest Studies Credit Card Intake Form (on the Web at http://swcenter.fortlewis.edu/Forms/sw-93.htm ) which enables users to make payment to the Center by using a credit card (in person, by letter, by phone, or by fax -- but not by email, due to security considerations).
(Note: as a second possible option, pending copyright issues and any restrictions and the availability of a copy master, the Center may sell a researcher a copy of microfilm for the cost plus a fee. Ask the Archivist.)

CONDITIONS OF USE:
The user agrees:
1. to use the microfilm only for the purpose stated on this form, and
2. to return the microfilm undamaged; this requires using care in using and shipping the microfilm -- for example, by not using a microfilm viewing machine that would scratch the film, and by using care in packaging the film for return to the Center, via First Class mail or by hand delivery to the Delaney Library, and
3. to credit each use of the microfilm to: Fort Lewis College, Center of Southwest Studies, [name of collection], [title and date], and
4. to make advance payment to the Center of the refundable microfilm deposit fee and the nonrefundable microfilm loan fee, and
5. to provide the Center, at the Center's
request, a complimentary copy of any publication or production using the
Center's special collections, including the microfilm.
LIMITATIONS:
The Center of Southwest Studies reserves the
right to refuse to loan microfilms and/or to limit the number of rolls it loans.
NOTICE: WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS
The copyright law of the
United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies
or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions
specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a
photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the
photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private
study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses,
a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may
be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves
the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment
of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
