Videotape Use Policy

The following policy pertaining to the Center of Southwest Studies' holdings of videotapes was adopted by the Center on February 9, 1999.

(1)  The Center will permit no circulation (including interlibrary loan) of its original special collections material, and that includes original videotapes. Such videotapes must be used within the research areas of the Center.

(2)  Select videotapes will be duplicated and housed by the Center in accordance with the "Fair Use" provisions of Title 17, United States Code. Videotapes thus selected shall be those with a purchase price greater than $80, or acquired from a foreign source or with a foreign imprint, or which may be difficult or impossible to replace if the original is damaged, lost or stolen.

(3)  The originals of video tapes that have been duplicated shall be maintained by the Center under "archival" conditions and shall be surveyed periodically by the Center's archival staff for indications of deterioration, improved climate control, etc. They shall be stored in "played" condition.

(4)  The duplicate copy will be cataloged and used as the circulation copy. Circulating copies will be labeled with a statement regarding fair use and copyright restrictions. Duplicate videotape reproductions may be sent out by ILL or (possibly) in reply to reference queries received by the Center.

(5)  Researchers who submit a written request may directly borrow up to two duplicate videotapes at a time. The Center requests that it be given three working days' advance notice so that a copy can be made. These videos are to be returned within two weeks and must be returned before any additional material(s) can be borrowed.
