RG 16 School of Business Administration

• Historical note:  Fort Lewis College has been granting business degrees since 1963, but the School of Business was formed as part of the College's academic reorganization that was effective July 1, 1970.  380 students were enrolled in the school in March of 1972.   (Source: Fort Lewis College press release #229 dated March 17, 1972.)   The name of the original Division of Business was changed to the Division of Business and Economics by approval of the State Board of Agriculture on May 12, 1964.   The title of Director, School of Business Administration was changed to Dean, School of Business Administration, by action of the State Board of Agriculture on May 9, 1979.

• Organizational note: rather than departments and chairs, the School of Business has five areas, each with its own coordinator.  The School has nine options for courses of study by persons majoring in Business.  The courses in the 9 options are drawn from various of the 5 areas.

• Historical note: established as a major in January of 1970 (as approved at the State Board of Agriculture meeting on Oct. 24, 1969).

• Historical note: this program was begun in February 1995 as a model of government outsourcing; it is run on a contractual basis through the Fort Lewis College Foundation with a private firm that produces the seminars and shares with Fort Lewis College a percentage of any profits.

• Historical note: this program was begun in early 1999 as a function of the School of  Business, with Professor Roy Cook as its director/ sponsor.  Its purpose is to utilize business students to examine and report on issues of local tourism.   The trademark for the Tourism Research Center was registered on March 4, 1999.
