• Historical note:  In October of 1975, the Colorado Commission on Higher Education (CCHE) approved a Fort Lewis College Associate of Arts (AA) degree in Agriculture.  A memorandum of agreement was reached in Sept. 1964 by the Colorado State University Experiment Station and Fort Lewis College to use Hesperus Experiment Station personnel to teach Agriculture courses; the agreement was terminated in early 1971.

• Historical note: Chemistry was established as a major in January of 1970.  Effective with the 1956-58 catalog, Fort Lewis began offering an Associate of Science degree for successful candidates in chemistry (among other programs of study for the AS degree).  The 1962-63 and  1963-64 catalog  mentions a choice of BA or BS; for the BS degree program, a person had the choice of a major in Biological Science or one in Physical Science, with chemistry as a possible minor.  The 1969-70 catalog describes majors in Biology and in Physical Science; chemistry was then an option within the Physical Science major.  The 1970-71 catalog (published in March of 1970) announced that there now was a chemistry major (as approved at the State Board of Agriculture meeting on Oct. 24, 1969).  Accreditation by the American Chemical Society on April 10, 1980 was reported to the State Board of Agriculture on Feb. 20, 1981.

• Historical note: this was briefly called the Physics, General Science and Engineering Department until it was agreed to officially change the name back at Faculty Assembly meeting on Jan. 12, 1995.  On Aug. 14, 1964 the State Board of Agriculture approved establishing a 3-2 program with the Colorado State University College of Engineering, effective Sept. 1, 1964.  On Jan. 22, 1965 the Board approved expanding the joint program to include mechanical and electrical engineering.  On April 21, 1978, the State Board of Agriculture authorized the college to submit a formal proposal to CCHE for their approval of a new program leading to a B.A. in Physics -- but CCHE denied the physics major on October 6, 1978 and again in early 1982, but approved the major on September 9, 1983.

• Historical note: The news clippings for Sociology (Series 15.3.P.1) contain an article from the Independent 3/16/1973 (page 6) that "a controversial proposed sociology major has been ratified in principle by the Curriculum and Education Development Committee."   The article describes the three alternative program alternatives proposed for the major.  The article does not mention when Sociology had become a department.  On October 18, 1974, the State Board of Agriculture authorized the college to submit a formal proposal to CCHE for their approval of a new program leading to a B.A. in Sociology.  The annual Fort Lewis College catalogs indicate that the program became "Sociology and Geography" effective 1970-71 (cf. page 96); prior to that, i.e., in the 1969-70 catalog issue, page 59, there was an area ( in those days, the College had Divisions, and these courses were within the Division of Humanities) of Social Science, which included courses in Anthropology and Archaeology and also several three-credit courses that look like Sociology course offerings today: course #263 Contemporary Social Problems, course #261 Collective Behavior, and course #303 Personality and Society.  The General Information for New Students brochure dated March 1969 does not mention Sociology as either a minor or a major (cf. p. 22, Division of Humanities).
